Alternative is a useless tag, it's been used to encompass everything from Depeche Mode to NIN to U2 to Soundgarden.

Speaking of BM, here's a short film that's part of the Sundance festival this year.

Yeah gothic rock and Dead Can Dance in their more sort of medieval, pagan, and classical style all really influenced the origins of true (second wave and onwards) black metal. But why did you post that video? It had a cartoonish idea of black metal at best, and seemed very hollywoodesque. The sort of thing of which pro-censorship public awareness campaigns are made. Not to mention that ridiculous triggers on the drums at the beginning. UGH.

Why must people insist that first wave black metal isn't 'true' black metal?

What are some good industrial/gothic metal bands in the vain of Paradise Lost circa late 90s/early-mid 2000s?

In the 80s any metal that referred to Satanic themes was considered to be black metal. Anything from maybe Kreator to Hellhammer to Mercyful Fate.

Do you really consider Venom to be in the same genre as Darkthrone?

I don't think it is either, I was just using it as an example, since people out there do consider it a genre. It's kind of like the term "Hard Rock". What exactly is "Hard Rock"?

Katatonia, In Flames, Lamb of God, Mastodon??

Granted, the last 3 have some Nu-Metal qualities, but you have Korn listed, and Korn is the ****ing originator of that bull ****.

Speaking of Katatonia, I really have no idea what to label them these days... they're not exactly Death/Doom or Doom metal anymore...

I'd say Venom is NWOBHM, with some black metal qualities. They helped create Black Metal, they aren't exactly Black Metal , but you can make a strong argument for them to be considered Black Metal. There's really no definitive explanation/answer.

Yup, love Katatonia. Though I don't know if I'd group them with Paradise Lost from that era, they lack that industrial-depeche mode ish metal quality that I was getting at. I guess not a lot of bands have gone down that path - which makes my love for Paradise Lost grow even fonder tbh.

Kvelertak signs to Roadrunner. lol. Absolutely predictable on that one.

Their novelty has worn off anyway.

Nice avatar. I haven't heard a lot of newer metal. Not heard Katatonia yet, but I've been meaning to. I'll listen to them later and post something. Keep on hearing about them. In Flames, yeah missed them. Lamb of God, okay maybe. I heard them once this last summer and sort of had a southern metal feel. Mastodon I just saw some animated cartoon for one of their videos and it definitely didn't sound metal to me. I'll admit I've been really anal about categorizations of metal for some reason.

Meh. That album was fun for a while, but once the novelty of it wore off it didn't have much staying power. I'll still listen to their next release, but I don't have much hope for it.

Their live show is hit or miss. First time I saw them it was enjoyable. Second time was boring.

Re: Katatonia--Dead End Kings sort reminds me of Agalloch but worse. Definitely not metal. Jhva Elohim Meth... the Revival sounds metal to me. Overall I find these guys boring and lacking intensity so far.
