Vancouver Sun: Stars owner Tom Gaglardi shoots down Brian Burke-to-Dallas rumour

http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/S...105/story.html

Quote:
Shortly after David Pratt inadvertently dropped the F-bomb on his CKNW show Thursday night, Dan Russell came back with some explosive on-air material of his own with news that Brian Burke can scratch the Dallas Stars from his immediate employment plans.

The Tom Gaglardi-owned Dallas franchise had been referenced as Burke’s next potential NHL stop after his firing as president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“Brian once said that when he takes something on there are two hands on the steering wheel and both of them are his,” Gaglardi told Russell. “He’s a top dog kind of guy and one day he’ll be back in the league as a general manager. But right now I don’t know how or where he’d fit in with us if he wasn’t in charge.”

Gaglardi proceeded to praise current GM Joe Nieuwendyk for his leadership and making positive changes in focusing on the draft and player development with the Stars.

If Burke didn’t hear the comments on radio, he will have received the message from Gaglardi in person Friday night in Kamloops. The WHL Blazers, also owned by Gaglardi, were retiring Scott Niedermayer’s jersey and Burke was part of the on-ice celebration. Niedermayer played a key role in the Anaheim Ducks’ 2007 Stanley Cup win when Burke was GM.

I think Burke is all set to be the next GM of the Capitals if they keep playing the way they have recently.

I can't see McPhee being spared this year and Oates is definitely a goner.

Isn't GMGM a part-owner of the team?

I'm sure in a couple of years we will see Burkie taking up a consultant role with the Bruins organization.

Where are you getting this from? Pretty sure he's not.

Wow, I didn't know that. Is it so?

He'll step down then and move to president or something and save face.

Brian Burke is great at rounding teams out. He did a fantastic job in Anaheim, getting Hiller, assembled the entire defense and added depth.

I confused him with Jim Rutherford. I recalled a thread a few years ago where someone suggested that Rutherford might lose his job, and a few posters mentioned that he was part owner. I confused the two. My bad!

I think it would be a good fit. Smallish market that falls in line with his core values.

Damnit, I miss Burke. It was pretty stupid to fire him before the short season. At least wait to fire him in the off season after the Leafs finish last and after Burke has worked his magic at the trade deadline and draft.

I think we are all well over the point that Burke was fired because of non-hockey related issues.
