This is a tough scenario for me to look at.

Phaneuf has a couple years left on his deal at a cap hit of 6.5M, but his salary drops to 5.5 next year.

He isn't an elite defender, but he is a decent #1, very good #2.

He has actually played pretty good this year, but I was kind of shocked to look at see that he is a -8 to open the year.

I have no idea how to value him.

TO be honest, If I were Nonis, I had be opened to shipping him around. Like others have said, his market value right now is at hos utmost high. And plus, Dion is never going to get the quality support that he so needs in order to be solid top-pairing d-man, If this team is going to go anywhere, it won't be with Phaneuf as a #1 d-man. well not unless he has a legit top shutdown d-man in the mold of Suter, Hamhuis, Vlasic, McDonagh, etc by his side.

I think if he can garner a return which could potentially make us a better team going forward, you don't hesitate.

So many people obviously dont watch any games. Dion Phaneuf is an amazing shut-down D-man, much better than matter teams have.

If, we were blowing up, I'd want to trade Kessel+40% cap hit deduction for Granlund+ and Phaneuf+40% for Schenn bros lol.

Stajan, Begin, Butler and Stempniak! You're gonna love Stemps!

In all seriousness I'd take him back on the Flames in a heartbeat. Sure he never lived up to his contract but I did enjoy having him on the team. Wideman is essentially a lesser Phameuf anyways. Too bad the Flames probably aren't willing to cough up the cost.

Send Briere + Simmonds back? I know that's a lot, just not sure what else you could add. Dunno... value may be way off, have a bad feeling that both sides won't like it. Don't flame too much. XD

Leafs don't want Briere.

If we do this we are rebuilding. Briere is old and useless for us.

Dion is a pylon defensively.

That said, whether it be Flames, Oilers, Wild, Avs. Make it work, the Sedins can't wait to add to their point totals.

At this stage, back to Calgary for a pick and Roster might work.

There is a market for Phaneuf even do I doubt teams would be interested in him if he was to become their #1 d-man like he is in Toronto. He simply dont have the brains for that job. But a team who already have a defensive sound first pairing d-man who can play many minutes but who are looking for some one to pair him with would of course be interested in Dion.

He have a 1 1/2 year left on his $6.5m contract but since Leafs can afford to pay some of that salary that would not be a problem.

Phaneuf for RoR (if Leafs can work out a deal with him) would be beneficial for both teams.

Colin Wilson would be another player that interest me. And the idea of having Weber and Phaneuf would give Preds one of the toughest blue lines in the league. And I am pretty sure that infront of Rinne and in Trotz system and in a less exposed role I think Dion would be really good.

A pro scout once told me.

"Dion is a physical beast, unfortunately he has the brain of one too!"

Ha yep. All of the flaws in his game relate to decision making. His actual skill set beyond that is at an elite level.

In saying that, id be more open to moving Kessel over Phaneuf.
- Kessel would get us the bigger return
- Losing Phaneuf means longterm our blueline looks pretty weak physically as well as lacks a big point shot
- Keeping Phaneuf means we can pair him with a high IQ type of player like Rielly, could be a great top pairing
- Defence are more important than wingers
- Phaneuf has a better rounded game than Kessel does, and Kessel will expect a big raise next contract, whereas Phaneuf would probably get the same or even slightly less

I don't know if there's much that interests me in terms of prospects in Colorado. But that deal you posted is really bad.

He'd get a solid return for sure. Someone of Quincey's (lol) calibre got a 1st....
If leafs eat 30-40% of his cap then he's get a ransom I'd think

Good point. Guys like Quincey and Gaustad both got 1sts last year.

If Toronto took some of the salary, Phaneuf should get quite a bit more. He's not perfect, but he's definitely a more valuable player by far than those two.

Minnesota wants D help but are up against the cap, if we ate some of Phaneufs salary + took a cap dump from them, they have a number of prospects id be interested in.

Hmm.. Interesting.

At this point unless Toronto can fill a big hole (like 1st line center, which is doubtful) or a couple of holes, I don't see how trading him would make sense.

Mitchell (2ish mill cap of uselessness) + prospects
For
Phaneuf @ 3.25 mil this year.

Those prospects would be blue chip for sure. Suter-Phaneuf for an extra 1.5 mil in cap compared to Mitchell

At this point there is no point of keeping Phaneuf. This team needs a change. I love Phaneuf. But send him somewhere where he could win, and let us rebuild the right way. I'm confident Rielly will be a legit #1 guy.

Perhaps.

Maybe Detriot would be interested, not sure what you could get, but I could see him having success in DET.

Phaneuf is young enough to be around for like 10 more years if he wanted to and wasnt traded. He would bring a physical element / big shot that neither Rielly nor Gardiner can really supply, and would be something we'd be missing from the top pairing with him gone.

In saying that, if there was a good deal to be had, i wouldnt be against it. We could have one of the top prospect pools league wide if Phaneuf was traded for a blue chipper + 1st and then our own 1st was a top 5 pick this year.

But I do think if we move Phaneuf, we'll be looking to find a very similar player down the line. A #2-3 physical D with a good shot.
