I would suspect that if Rogers and Bell have a falling out over the TV rights to the Leafs one side will be bought out with royalty rights for a 2nd Toronto franchise in Markham. Win win for both sides really.

I would slightly enjoy it if Rogers ended up with the Leafs wearing blue and Bell ended up with Toronto two wearing red.

That's how I'd hope it goes down.

Yup. Welcome to the Maple Leafs. The only way out is in a body bag.

Go Leafs go.

Easy there blue eyes or is that just the colour of your glasses? Unlike some Leaf fans, I'm realistic - I realise the Maple Laughs suck and aren't worthy of our support after all these years of failure and wanting money over a Cup. That being said, even though I refuse to give them a penny of my money, I'll still cheer them because they're my hometown team. If another Toronto team (a pipedream, I say) is created that actually tries to win, guess what? There's a hometown team worth cheering for. Calling people names over loogical choices just destroys your credibility

People obviously will switch. Though the Leafs will always be the main / most popular GTA team.

If you're a 10-15 minute drive from the new arena vs 45 minutes+ from the ACC, have young kids who don't have allegiances yet, could potentially get seasons tickets with the new team but could never get them from the Leafs (at least in the next 20 years), etc. I could see a variety of reasons why people would switch.

Personally since I'm not from Toronto (though I do live here currently) and don't plan to live here longterm, I'll stay faithful to the Blue and White. There would be no reason for me to switch to the other GTA team.

I will always have a place in my heart for the Leafs, but Markham is a heck of a lot closer and I bet ticket prices would be lower. Plus the atmosphere will probably be more to my liking, read, fans cheering instead of sitting in suits.

Sadly the Leaf product and MLSE as a whole does not know how to entertain. Their story is often of dispare. Unfortunate since they have such loyal fan bases.

I'd have no problem getting season tickets in Markham and cheering for a young energetic club that doesn't have the same manic fanbase. It would be refreshing to get away not only from the Leafs but their fanbase.

Yep. I've often thought about this. If you switch you fan loyalty to another team, you get thrown under the bus. But in reality, what has MLSE done to EARN fan loyalty over the last ~8 years? I'm not saying I'm going to switch loyalty, because I feel I've been a fan for too long and couldn't. But I have wondered why I do bother to continue to support this team.
- Highest ticket prices in the league
- Only team not to have made the playoffs in that span
- Still has a questionable future with only a mediocre prospect pool and no real franchise players on the roster either
- Lame atmosphere at games compared to many other arenas

I don't know how to switch elegance. I will most likely go after the season tickets for biz and other purposes, but I will always be Leaf fan #1.

a) No Team will be as elegant as the Leafs

b) Selfishly I hope a 2nd Team comes and some jump ship. They aren't fans to begin with and it would help to thin out the herd.

lol at people who still think Markham is at the top of the list for a 2nd GTA team. A market with no good transportation link and one of the lowest GTA city populations with a 50% Asian immigrant population who care jack squat about hockey.

Markham would blow for a second team in Toronto. Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan and Hamilton would all be before Markham.

They're building an NHL calibre arena and could easily draw from population centres of Markham, Vaughn, Aurora, New Market, Oshawa, Ajax, Whitby, Brampton, etc.

At the end of the day, any of Markham, Mississauga, etc could have an NHL team and reasonably expect to sell out. Markham just jumped the gun and is building an arena, so they get priority by far.

As for Hamilton. I legitimately believe you could have two teams in GTA (Toronto + Markham) and another team in Hamilton and have all three be in the top 15 revenue-wise. Hamilton can draw from itself, Burlington, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Niagara, etc.

The population of the GTA + Hamilton + Niagara + K-W + Guelph + etc is probably equal to close to 10M. Ottawa/Calgary/Edmonton all support very viable teams with a populations of ~1M each.

I work in Markham and it's easier to get to it from all the eastern and northern burbs than downtown. Viva/ Yrt are fine I took them several times.

I would cheer for a new Toronto team especially

if they wear Black with silver crest, numbers, name / with orange outlines. That would be wicked .

That'd be a real shame. I doubt MLSE is attracting very many new fans these days due to their ineptitude. Release a new team to fans in Toronto! I won't comment on whether or not I'd support a new team but I fail to see how it would be a bad thing at all. I'm thinking only positives when you give people a choice

They're wasting their money on an NHL caliber arena (if it really is) because no way no how would a 2nd Toronto team ever go to Markham. Smallest Population in the GTA, Least interest for hockey among their demographics in the GTA, Terrible highway access, terrible Public transit and on the wrong side of the side of Toronto.
