I thought Thornton deserved a Star of the Week as well, especially over St. Louis.
If Marleau gets a star, Thornton deserves a star. I don't care who gets what star but both players deserved stars not just one. St. Louis did not deserve it over Thornton. I'm not sure how they cannot give the guy tied for the league lead in scoring a star. Ridiculous.
Good piece by Lebrun, who we know is a Sharks fan.
Well, it sure was interesting Monday to hear how an opposing NHL head coach honestly views Patrick Marleau.
And we say "honestly" because the coach asked and was afforded anonymity in order to give his full view of the 33-year-old San Jose Sharks forward who has been maligned like few other NHL stars in this league over the past decade.
"To me, Patrick Marleau is a player that’s misunderstood and misrepresented," said the Western Conference coach. "He’s a very, very good 200-foot player. Even when he’s not scoring, he’s one of the best penalty killers in the league. He was a great player in the Olympics. He’s just a quiet guy. Even when he’s not scoring, he still contributes in other areas that he never gets any credit for. He does a lot of other things well that as a coach, you really appreciate."
So when this coach hears all the critics hammer Marleau, especially at playoff time, he doesn’t get it.
"It’s really, really unfair the criticism that he’s taken," said the coach. "If you really watch him carefully as an opposition coach, you appreciate all the little things that he does that gets you out of the ditch all the time. Honestly, he’s a much better player than he’s ever been given credit for."
That said, there are a few of us around here who have been beating that horse to death for years. My one and only jersey is an authentic Marleau (with the C!), and I really have no motivation to get a new one. Marleau is the best player this team has ever drafted and one of the best two players that has ever played for this team. The hate he gets is absolutely stupid.
Marleau and Thornton #1 & 2 in points. Don't see how Thornton doesn't get recognized for his contributions thus far. Now if it were Crosby and Malkin, they would be praising their names all over NHL.com and TSN.ca
Marleau should not have even been given a star if Thornton did not get one two each of their success has been so interdependent so far that this is ridiculous, Thornton has been a better player so far IMHO but that's irrelevant, both have been extremely important to this 5-0 start and therefore, if the decision is to leave one off of this, there is no reason that either should be omitted if one is. Just saying.
