I've played NHL 2004, That game has, without a doubt" one of the best fighting engines and the best Dynasty mode of any hockey game I've ever played.
However, as to which is my favorite, NHL 2004 has to compete with the first video game I ever played, NHL 2001.
I've played through two PlayStation 2 copies and currently have a PC copy of NHL 2001, man do I love it. The hitting in that game just felt worth it, even if I got a penalty or sometimes two. I abused the big hit button in NHL 2001 when I would play against the Flyers. The menu soundtrack of NHL 2001 is one of the best in the series, in my opinion. If only people (Whoever EA gets their feedback from) could realize that making a fun video game doesn't mean that it has to be completely realistic.
Both games have Jim Hughson, so both have excellent commentary.
The mods for 2004 are fantastic though, if only EA would just go back to NHL 2004 instead of the direction they are heading in now. I personally do not like the new direction.
I can't decide at the moment.

I loved NHL 2000. My favorite part of it was having the ability to do the expansion draft of either the Blue Jackets or Wild prior to beginning the Be a GM mode. It was also the first time when you could hit a player and knock their helmet off, which was again introduced as a new feature 10 years later...
NHL 08 was the introduction of the new skating engine which made the ea sports edition with the skill-stick actually playable. early 00s games were too arcadey and that's why I preferred 2ksports at the time. Skill stick made this series what it is today, but 07 was so ****** because you couldn't play defense. NHL 08 is the biggest and most important game in the current gen.
i could remember the first Hockey game I ever got was 2k9 with Nash on the cover that was when I really got into hockey. I could remember playing that for hours and hours on end I guess thats gotta be my fave just because I have so many memories playing it
NHL 2Kinsertnumberhere, mostly because I hate having a 25 season limit on Be a GM mode.
You too?
Not to mention that ESPN NHL 2k5 has pretty much every jersey of every team ever. I like the old '90s Phoenix jerseys and the black and red Buffalo Sabres jerseys. Plus that game was pretty kick ass, although it was a bit slow. I wish EA would at least put all the possible jerseys in the game that teams have used.
