For sure. He shouldn't be afraid of shooting.

My point was more to highlight that scratching Larsen wasn't that horrible of a decision when you look at the rest of the d. Gully wanted to play Rome, which is understandable. None of Robidas, Daley, or Goligoski will be scratched. Dillon has been the best of the three kids, so he's not going to get scratched. That left it to Benn and Larsen, and either choice was fine.

I'll agree with that. It can be a flawed stat. Goose was a +20 when he got here. Doesn't look like that will ever happen again, but he did play with a decent team from the east

That's solid reasoning, but argue most people are just drawn to Dillon's bigger, flashier hits. It's the Fistric effect.

Larsen hasn't played poorly defensively. I'd say he and Dillon have both played extremely well. Larsen is physical too, he just doesn't have the size that lends itself to big, loud hits.

The only young defender to have truly awful moments is Benn. I've liked his overall game, but you have several examples of terrible, terrible decision making. I don't think there is more than one right choice. If you want Rome to play, he needs to rotate with Benn. Of the three youngest players, he's made the biggest blunders. I'd be just fine with Rome never playing though ... unless he's an injury replacement.

Part of the reason I'm drawn to that is because it stands out as something none of the other guys can deliver. It differentiates him from the otherwise average sized group of finesse d-men.

Scratching Larsen was an experiment to see what Rome was capable of. I won't crucify Gully for that. But if it happens again, there are no excuses.

On scratching smith:

"I think sometimes it’s good at points in a young guy’s career to sit and watch games, especially if it’s back-to-back,” Gulutzan said. “You just make the decision: Do you put him with the lines we have? Vincour and Fiddler and Nystrom had a little bit of something going, so if we put him for 8 or 9 minutes on the fourth line, is that going to benefit him? Or should we sit him and then try to get him 14 minutes…because he needs minutes.”

The **** does this mean?

Apparently playing with Morrow is considered worse than not playing at all.

Reconsidering that quote .... I'd guess that means Reilly Smith is going to the AHL after this road trip.

Of course, if they didn't believe 4th line minutes were good for him, then why the hell was he not playing in the AHL with Sceviour or Vincour getting 4th line NHL minutes earlier. Outside of one game, all he's payed has been on the 4th line with extremely limited PP minutes.

Did he just have some damn epiphany?

Stop looking for the logic. It's beyond obvious at this point that you're not going to find it here. Isn't this where Niewendyk steps in and has to say, "I don't care how you do it but play the kids." For all the **** Hull/Jackson got at least Jackson put his foot down about development. Maybe we should listen to him again and see what he thinks of the usage of Larsen and Smith. His judgment of player development is second to none in this organization and a voice of reason needs to speak up soon before another season is wasted.

Hell maybe we need a Robidas/Morrow/Fiddler/Wandell trade just to open up a spot? Because it seems they're going to get the priority over the prospects no matter the results.

I honestly think Wandell will get moved before Sceviour, Smith, or Vincour get sent down.

Gonna have to pull a Texas Rangers move and trade Morrow (Young) to force Gully's hand because he's too moronic to make decisions on his own.

That's not enough. He's insinuating 4th line minutes aren't enough. Moving Wandell still keeps him on the 4th line.

The likelihood of that actually happening is so unbelievably remotely slim.

I don't think Smith will displace any of the top 6 wingers.

Oh well down to the AHL with Smith so he can play 18 minutes a night.

I don't either which is why I assume he's going back down when Roy is healthy. I'd prefer they roll 4 lines and keep him in the NHL, but that doesn't seem likely.

Is there any consensus on the best winger to fill in the top 6? I would like to see Smith/Fraser there when injuries open a space, but it would make more sense for them to play top line AHL minutes than 4th line NHL ones in the interim IMO.

Fraser seems like 3rd-4th line tweener / power play specialist. I think Smith is top 6 or bust. But not this year.

Honestly who could he supplant this year? With a top six of jagr benn loui and whitney roy ryder (or however it shakes out), that gives him some third line time to climb up. Him and eakin have shown good chemistry. let me them figure it out on the third and push top six next year.

Sidenote: Eakin's face-offs have been very encouraging.

Fraser has a deadly shot, and a deadly nose for the net too.

I hope I'm wrong, but like I mentioned in the GDT earlier today, is Gully seriously deciding which D play on the PP based on who they are paired with?

I don't want to complain since it works in Larsen's favor tonight, but it's also silly if that's the only reason Robi was on the PP earlier.

This is backwards. Smith can play up or down a lineup and be a valuable member of a team while Fraser is the guy who is a top 6 or bust type. A checking line would be dragged down by his defensive game and any potential PP contributions he could make would probably be hampered by playing with 4th line caliber players on a regular basis.

You should complain regardless because that's a retarded reason.

Look at that, Larsen contributes to the PP.
