You're in competition with them. You want them to overpay. You want to **** up their cap structure.

Personally, I think Subban had offersheets to sign, so it's a bit of a moot point. But offersheets should be used far more often (within your division, and with other teams that aren't realistic trading partners... kinda going back to poisoning relationships, I have no issue with guys not wanting to offersheet because of the impact that could have on their ability to make deals down the road).
How many offer sheets have we seen in the last decade? Why is this suddenly an issue? There is a reason why GMs don't offer them left and right.

The cap ceiling is the same for everyone, mate....regardless of how much revenue you generate.

This is an excellent face-saving deal for Subban.

The cap-hit is $2,875,000 over this half-season plus a full-season next year.

In real dollars, the significantly smaller amount gets paid this year when almost half of it is gone anyway because of the lockout ($2 million pro-rated to a bit more than half of that) while next year he gets a full salary of $3,750,000.

After which he's an RFA again, with arbitration rights. Long-term win for Subban, easily.

Totally agree quote me in a few years, he will become an UFA and will not sign with the HABs.

Exactly.

Both sides are winning for different reasons.

Right... Try reading my post again. What I said was whether he's upset or not, a press conference isn't going to show anything. Players aren't going to show up to a press conference and whine about the deal they just signed. They're going to say how excited they are to be part of the team going forward

The habs might very well have made a statement toward younger players coming up in the organization, you got to take the bridge contract and then you are going to get paid. That, i like. (I dont necessarily agree that Subban was a good candidate to make a statement however, althougth it turn out great for now).

As for the habs having to pay him fair market value later on. So be it. Some players pans out, some dont. I'd much rather be paying 6M$ a year for the guy that pans out and 2M$ a year for the guy that dont for decent lenght contracts than pay both 4M$ sooner but for a bit longer "just in case". That way i'm rewarding the guy that is worth the money and the other guy actually still have value on the market, him not been overpaid for 4 more years.

Please explain how this is an issue for Montreal. If Chicago can pay Hossa, Toews, Kane and Keith, why can't the Habs pay Subban? Malkin, Crosby, Fleury, Letang? Marleau, Thornton and that D? The Rangers? Jesus.

It matters when half the teams in the league can't afford to spend to said cap ceiling and Montreal is one of the ones that can easily spend that much.

Great deal for MTL, can't believe Subban signed for less than 4.5 per. Underpaid for sure.

A 3-1 start and now Subban signs for a very reasonable contract...must be a good day to be a Habs fan.

Now get O'Reilly signed, Colorado!

Also its funny, since the gomez trade Habs were made fun of for overpaying a player and now they are criticized for getting a player to a less than market deal.

You guys just love to hate the habs

Say what you want about Mtl D, but they now have two 2-way number 1 dmen that play all situation and be on different pairings, so for 50+ min a game either PK or Markov are gonna be on the ice

All I meant was the salary raises will create issues with the cap. It has nothing to do with revenue generation or an ownership willing to spend. It's an issue for every team with budding superstars. Not just MTL.

The same Chicago that had to gut an entire line- Byfuglien, Ladd, and Versteeg?

How can you post on this forum and not understand what RFA is?

I thought there was a general consensus that we never ever want to hear that phrase again.

This seems risky. He probably could've gotten a 4-8 year deal at Carlson/Fowler's $4 M cap hit or a bit higher. He held out for the ability to earn $6-7 M which he may not ever get.

Why wouldn't he? They'll pay him what he's worth when he's proven he's worth it. To give a 23yo a huge long term contract, what incentive is there to continue to develop? Gomez says hello. He's also a huge Habs fan from birth. He'll stick around.

I totally agree. While he may have accepted that low ball off this time around when he gets to UFA he wont be accepting any hometown discounts with the habs and will probably sign elsewhere. I hope it was worth it Bergevin.
