OUA EAST - 2012-13 Mid-Term Report

My focus for today is the OUA East Division. This division includes Quebec's three CIS teams. They have really dominated this division. In the last 8 years UQTR and McGill each have 4 first place finishes and 4 second places finishes. The last other team to crack the top two was Ottawa, and that was back in 2004. Could Cartoon pull it off this year?

The discussion of this division must start with the McGilligutties. They are the defending champions, and this was their first title despite being perhaps the world's oldest hockey team (established 1877). Until last spring, even the Leafs could point to and laugh at that streak.

Anyhow, they started well in pre-season. Three games, three wins. But after being pounded by the Squirrels they started the regular season with 3 straight losses to a cross-section of opponents (#31 Concordia, #7 UQTR, and #18 Ottawa). They rebounded a bit, aided to a great extent by a soft schedule. They are 7-1 against C teams and a combined 3-4 against A and B teams. Still, it took many pollsters quite a while to bump them down in the rankings. The OHT35 has them at #16. Consistent wins over good teams will be required if they want to climb in the rankings.

This is a good time to point out that after last season's strong performance by the OUA-E, this year they lost the interlock 24-12 to the OUA-W. As a result, there are not a lot of wins to spread around. A by-product of this is that the division leads the country in C level teams (5). Ryerson have had 9 games against C teams, McGill, Toronto, and Queen's have had 8.

UQTR are back at the top this year. Their record is somewhat enigmatic. In pre-season they won 3 of 5 in a trip through the AUS. The regular season has basically been good. But they have a 6-2 loss to Ottawa, a non-conference loss to Norwich (NCAA3), and on the final weekend need a shoot-out to beat RMC and OT to beat Queen's.

The Cartoon Ravens have finally started to fulfil some promise. They came to Manitoba for pre-season games in the fall of 2009. They reminded me of UBC, in that they were a bit chippy and an average sort of team. Despite some highly touted recruiting classes since that time, they have not been able to win consistently against good teams. So this season's burst into the A level is somewhat overdue.

Ottawa and Toronto are still considered B teams. Toronto could slip to C. It is hard to believe that they were getting top 10 votes in the CIS poll. They are only 2-5-1 against A and B teams. Ottawa had 4 straight extra time losses. That must be a record of some sort.

The C teams seem in no danger of moving up. Queen's and Nipissing have been ruling the C teams. But against A and B teams The Queens are 0-5-2 and the Nippers are 1-7-2. Concordia and Ryerson are disappointments. Concordia used to be perennial national contenders. Ryerson moved into the remodelled MLG and, one would have thought, would have a recruiting edge. Maybe next year. RMC is ranked ahead of somebody, and that alone must be nice for them.

OUA WEST - 2012-13 Mid-Term Report

Merry Christmas, everybody! The OHT35 always wants everybody to enjoy their holidays. At this time of year it is not whether you are A, B, or C level that matters most.

That said, I really miss having a Boxing Day game to attend. The junior and university leagues are on hiatus, and the NHL has disappeared. The only games to watch are from Europe, and are over by afternoon.

Anyhow, here's my look at the OUA West.

The OUA West has the most evenly divided skew in the CIS, with 3 teams in each of the A, B, and C categories. Their dominance over the OUA East in their interlocking schedule also leaves no team below a C+ grade.

We should start with a look at the Urban Cowboys. They have been this division's dominant team and, with the OUA guaranteed two berths at nationals, they have been frequent fliers to University Cups. In fact, since 2000-01 they have been 1st on 9 occasions, 2nd twice, and only once as low as 3rd. This season they had a non-descript pre-season followed by a mediocre start. However, since they dropped the opener of a two game set in the Lakehead they rattled off 11 straight wins. Included was an 8-4 win over the McGilligutties to avenge a 6-2 pre-season loss.

After a decent playoff run last year, Windsor has finally put it together and has vaulted from a B/C level team into the A level. Like the teams in Canada West, Windsor tends to play weekend double-headers against the same opponent. They did have a 6-0 loss to UOIT and every now and then seem to come up with a game like that.

Completing the A level is the perennially enigmatic Thundermutt squad. At one time the whole country was anticipating them becoming a regular U-Cup contestant, at least. Instead they have been better-than-average but typically a shade below the real contenders. The program seemed to stall when they hosted nationals, which is most unusual. This season they have been a pleasant surprise. They have had a tough schedule. They are 4-3-1 against A level opponents. In comparison, the Urban Cowboys, Windsor, Cartoon U, and UQTR have only played 3 games each against A level teams.

A run at A level is within the grasp of Guelph. They started 1-5-1 (including pre-season) but have turned this around. Since then they have been 13-3, which includes splits with the Urban Cowboys and Windsor and two wins in Princeton.

Waterloo is as middle-of-the-road as a team could be. They are capable of wins and losses against the whole field. They copied the Bison plan of a pre-season trip to Deutschland, where they managed one win against two severe defeats.

York seemed to be ready to make a run, but in the end they are fighting to avoid reclassification to C level. They started the pre-season by establishing themselves as the top threat from the GTA. They won four games against the rest of the Big Lemon (and RMC) and only one game was close. This was followed a draw in Connecticut and a split in the Lakehead. All looked well. Since then, however, an overtime win over Ottawa is their only win against something better than a C level team.

The three C teams have all had their moments. Brock looks capable of catching York. They have not had quite the same mood swings. Laurier is quite incredibly 3-2-1 against A teams. UOIT has always had some bizarre results. For all three they are likely thinking they could vault into the mid-range with that elusive “greater consistency” coaches always talk about.

CANADA WEST - 2012-13 mid-term report

Finally, I have the mid-term report for the Canada West. I have saved it to the end because it is the only conference I get to see live.

Two preliminary comments: One, the CW teams did not play any interlocking games against the other CIS conferences. Two, I did not expect this conference to have two of the top three ranked teams in the CIS. So here goes my team-by-team comments.

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS

The Evil Monkeys lead the conference and the CIS rankings. They had few new recruits this year, simply because they did not need more. They returned basically a full roster from last year.

They also started with an ambitious schedule (8 pre-season games), starting ahead of everybody else on September 4th. They jumped all over a comparatively disorganized Bison squad in the opening weekend with a home sweep. IMO, they probably should have scheduled some tougher opponents. They had four games against ACAC teams.

However, 3 games in they appeared to hit a wall. They lost once to the New-Cougars-on-the-Block and twice more to the Banjo-Mutts for a 3 game losing streak. In each game, though, the Monkeys outshot their opponents (by 14 or 15 shots) and could easily have been rolling along unbeaten. In fact, the only tight game they had was when they beat Regina in a shoot-out.

That is, until they played a second series against Manitoba. That series exposed their flaw: They are not big fearsome Gorillas. They are tiny little Monkeys. The big bad Bisons pushed them around and generated oodles of great scoring chances. Mu-u-ucha (his Monkey name) was fabulous in goal in game 1, stopping two shorthanded breakaways and at least another dozen great saves on odd-man chances. It may well be that they are perfectly built to dominate and obliterate the less-skilled teams, or for that matter a relatively young, small team like Team Canada. So, would they be able the Bisons in a 3-games-in-3-days playoff series?

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES

The Banjo-Mutts have racked up the wins, but it seems that the prevailing opinion is that they are flattered by their record. They have a 3-1 record against the other A teams, but they could easily have been 0-4. They were outshot and outplayed in every game. But, they have a guaranteed host team berth in the University Cup to fall back upon.

My observation when they played Manitoba was that when their top line was on the ice they were competitive. When their first line was on the bench, they were thrilled if they could just get the puck out of their own end without giving up a goal.

In the home stretch they host Manitoba, UBC, and Calgary and have a home-and-home against Regina. Their away series are with Alberta and Lethbridge. IMO, if they can even claim one point against the Bisons they should be able to claim at least second place and a first round bye.

MANITOBA BISONS

The Bisons had a lot of turnover this year. Up front they usually have two lines of first year Bisons. While the players recruited had better junior stats than the players they replaced, they are first years replacing fourth or fifth years. Logically, in such situations one expects such teams to show improvement in the second half of the season.

There are signs this is happening for the Bisons. In the last series before the break the Bisons took 3 points off the Evil Monkeys, and it would have been 4 had it not been for either their failure to cash in on several golden opportunities or the Monkey goaltending, depending on what way you want to look at it. The 2nd and 3rd lines have started scoring, the 1st line and defence are as good as any in the CIS, and the Deckert/Caligiuri combo has compiled competitive stats over the last 2 years.

One thing about this year's CW: The lower echelon teams are not as competitive as they were even two years ago. Regina has exceeded expectations, and UBC and Calgary will not often be blanked against anybody. But it is hard to see Lethbridge and Mount Royal knocking off an A level team down the stretch. The Bisons trail the Banjo-Mutts by 5 points. Even if they get a 4-1 series win on points, they would be 2 points behind and in a tight spot to play catch-up.

UBC THUNDERBIRDS

The Tweety-Birds have been threatening to join the big schools in the CW at the top of the standings for years but it never seemed to happen. Last year was one where their recruits failed to elicit the usual fan-fare. But the team responded by looking better on the ice than they did on paper, for the first time since I started watching this league. IMO they got excellent mileage from many Junior 'A' recruits.

Last year UBC surprised everybody by charging into 4th place before a late-season swoon allowed the Bedrock Boys to hurdle past them and then beat them 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Once again, UBC has jumped ahead of the Extinct Lizards, but only by one point. The two teams meet on January 4th and 5th in British California. No need to embellish the importance of that one.

UBC is a threat against the A level teams, yet they are also vulnerable to the C level teams. They have had a funny non-conference schedule. They played SFU twice, once winning in overtime and then winning 8-0. They played two ACHA sides, winning 8-2 and then scrambling for an OTW. These are teams they should hammer, but they only do so one night and not on the other. They also have a win, a loss, and a tie against NCAA Div 1 teams.

Perhaps UBC's threatened move to the NCAA prevented them from getting their share of major junior recruits. With a solid annual crop of players right on their doorstep one would think this would be one of the better programs in the CIS. Can they finally step up?

CALGARY DINOS

The Bedrock Boys went to the nationals in 2011 and were deemed to be a program on the rise. But last season was a disappointment, though tempered by a playoff rally where they beat UBC and Manitoba then went to triple overtime in game 3 against Saskatchewan in the final. So entering this year one could say they showed resilience last year by rallying in the playoffs and so all is well. But something seems amiss. They have had some high points, such as an 8-0 win over the Banjo-Mutts. Their only other win against an A level team was a home ice shoot-out win over Manitoba.

I feel safe in stating that the prevailing opinion was that their recruits were not as good as their departed players. However, they have the same goaltenders and enough veterans at all positions that they are fully capable of beating any A level team on any given day. It seems that they and UBC are on a collision course for a quarter-final playoff series once again.

REGINA COUGARS

No team amazes me more than the Banjo-Cats. I saw them play the Bisons in pre-season and thought that they were actually worse than the last place team from the year before. The pre-season coaches' poll had them ranked a distant last, and I agreed with that prognostication. Then when I saw them again in the regular season, my opinion was confirmed.

But in-between the games I saw, it must be said that these felines racked up some decent wins. They somehow managed 2 points against UBC, 4 against Lethbridge, 2 each against Calgary and Mount Royal, 3 against Saskatchewan, and 1 against Alberta. That is down-right respectable. There are teams in playoff positions in the AUS and home-ice playoff positions in the OUA who would have trouble matching that stretch. Then after being out-classed twice in Friendly Manitoba, they again split with UBC. I am confounded. They have to be ranked in the B level, but it is not hard to imagine them having a dismal second half.

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS

The New-Cougars-on-the-Block got off to a rough start due to a very tough schedule. They opened with series against the three best teams and this put them in a tough spot from day one. On the positive side, they are done with Alberta and Saskatchewan. On the negative side, they trail the Old-Cougars-in-a-Banjo-Band by a full 8 points and only have 10 games to play.

Also, their results have been getting worse as the season has worn on. They were 2-1-1 in pre-season (all games decided by one goal). They were within seconds of going to OT against Saskatchewan and stole a win off the Apes. Since then they have had it rough. They closed the first half going 3-11, and 7 of those losses were by 3 goals or more.

|> [League Stat team stats page]

LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS

The H0rny Ones are, to say the least, a disappointment. Most pundits thought they would be fighting it out with the two sets of Cougars for the 6th and final playoff spot. But back-to-back sweeps against Regina and UBC back in October cast the die. I saw them after they had a much-need bye week in November. Although they played it as tough as possible against the Bisons, chippiness is no substitute for talent. Teams will be looking at them as the free space on the bingo card.

They need to win at least 10 out of 12 remaining games to steal 6th place. They ended the first half with losses by 9-4, 10-1, and 4-0. Draw your own conclusions.

So, we are back to regular scheduled programming. There were many intriguing matchups in the week just passed and the results forced a few shuffles. The big results of the weekend were:

- the Manitoba/Saskatchewan split
- the UNB win over Acadia, who then suffered a 2nd loss against UPEI
- the Calgary sweep of UBC
- the Guelph/Lakehead split
- McGill's back-to-back losses to Carleton and Ottawa
- Windsor's back-to-back losses to UOIT and York
- Moncton's continued slide

No teams shifted categories. I also narrowed the + signs. Only Guelph and Calgary are now in B+. The rest have faltered and are no imminent threat to advance to A level. Also, Laurier and UOIT are the only C+ teams for the same reason.

The rankings within A level are very sensitive. The top 3 are basically a dead heat. The Urban Cowboys could be there too if they had a few more wins against A level teams. (They are 1-2!) And Acadia went from challenging for #1 all the way to #7.

I know you have developed a formula for creating these rankings, but from a pure face validity standpoint, I really struggle with Lakehead, Windsor and St. FX being categorized with the best teams in the country. As I mentioned in a post before the break, after their sweep of Guelph the during the first weekend of conference play, Lakehead is essentially a .500 team in conference play - a trend that continued this past weekend. Windsor is 2-4 over their past 6 conference games. If Lakehead and Windsor were B+, Western would actually be 0-0 against A-level teams.

None of those teams are on the verge of being demoted.

Windsor was doing very well until this weekend. Now if that continues ...

Lakehead has had by far the OUA's toughest schedule. They have had 8 games against A level teams, and are 4-3-1. They have only played 3 games against C level teams.

I was considering giving St. F-X an A-. We'll see how they do this weekend.

Notes:

1. St. F-X got demoted from A to B, which has had a ripple effect in the rankings. In doing so, they tumble into the midst of the B level for a very severe drop. If past performance means anything, expect them to now enter a winning streak. They usually turn out to be a yo-yo team.

2. The underdog won 6 of 8 games in the AUS.

3. At this stage it is becoming harder to rank teams which have loads of games against C teams. Of note, the Urban Cowboys are 9-0 in those games, and only 1-2 against A teams. The Blahs are 10-1-1! The Nippers are 9-1. But Queen's can't complain because they are 7-2-1, and have not beaten an A or a B team. And are the McGilligutties getting better, or is that 8-1 roll over the weaklings keeping them afloat?

4. Is it time for a D level? The Pids, RMC, and The H0rny Ones should all be considering summer school.

are comments like this REALLY necessary?? You could just say "STU, RMC and Lethbridge need to get their acts together, or else they will be D level" and speaking for STU and RMC, kinda hard to beat teams with 15 skaters.

I know Lethbridge is also playing short-handed.

In any event, the three current C- teams are sinking more and more below the C teams. Ryerson, Concordia, and possibly even MRU could be looking at a C- rating but cannot go down because they are clearly a notch ahead of STU, RMC and Lethbridge. If a D means summer school then it could happen.

RMC beat Concordia in a home and home series. If that alone dosen't scream C-, dont know what does.

Notes:

1. The Monkeys stay #1. Their outburst against Lethbridge broke a string of low-scoring games for them. Including exhibition games, in 14 of their first 24 games they scored 4 or more goals. They then scored 4 goals but once in their next seven games (against Team Canada) until they faced Lethbridge.

2. The Squirrels nose out St. Mary's. They both edge out narrowly, but clearly, ahead of the next group.

3. The Cajuns, Urban Cowboys, Bisons, and Banjo-Mutts are in a dead heat. The problem is gauging the Urban Cowboys' 10 games against C level teams, whilst only having 3 games against A level teams. To compare them to Manitoba their records would be almost the same if the Urban Cowboys went 2-2 against A teams while Manitoba went 7-1 while playing 4 games each against B and C level teams. What's harder to do?

4. The Bedrock Boys, McGilligutties, and Guelph are very solid B+ teams and are very close to A level. Windsor is clinging to their A-. Changes here would hav a ripple effect.

5. How on earth did the Toronto Blahs ever get 13 games against C level teams? They cling to B- and Laurier barely stays in C+. But comparisons between those two are hard.

6. All-in-all there were no changes from #15 down.

Notes:

1. The first big decision was whether to promote the Bedrock Boys from B to A. They have been, after all, ranked in the official top 10 for two weeks now. The answer remains no, for now. I definitely have them one place below Windsor in the rankings, no matter how you slice it. I do not rule out promotion for any B+ team.

2. Laurier has been knocking at the door of B level for a while, and now they enter. This shuffles the rankings for a lot of teams, particularly OUA-W.

3. The Monkeys and Squirrels have been boosted to A+ since their records are clearly above the pack. The difference between them is minimal. They are so close that this is a good time to show how teams can be ranked when there is a tight squeeze. One method: Ask what would Team 1 have to do in order to have a record equivalent to Team 2? (And vice versa.) If Alberta were to lose to an A team and go 2-1 against B teams, i.e. 2-2 overall, and if New Brunswick were to beat an A team, lose in OT to a B team, and lose to a C team, i.e. 1-1-1 overall, they would be the same, and both a bit worse then they are now. Another method (which should get the same result) is to ask: What would their points probably be if they had make-up games to balance games played against each category? To do so, Alberta would have to play 2 games against B teams and UNB would have to play a C team. UNB would likely win, giving them 42 points. Alberta would likely go 2-0 or 1-0-1 (which they have done every series so far) for 42 or 43 points. So Alberta gets the edge. Barely.

4. Ranking the Urban Cowboys gets hard because they have such an extremely lop-sided schedule. They have only played 3 games against A level teams. The Queens are the only other team to play so few. Their division rival Lakehead has had 10 such games. Most A level teams have had 8 A level games so far.

5. The difference from one team to the next for teams #3 to #11 was very miniscule. The promotion of Laurier from C to B gives a boost to all those who have played them, particularly Windsor. The rankings for those teams are very sensitive. The SMUs and Cajuns have fallen from 3-4 to 7-10. They were #1 contenders not so long ago. I know that some will ask: How can 2nd in the AUS be behind 3rd in the CW? Well, the Banjo-Mutts and Cajuns both have played 8 games against A teams and 10 against B teams. The Cajuns have played one more game and have one more OTL. The Mutts are 6-0 against C teams, while the Cajuns are 7-0. If the Mutts win the game in hand, they are ahead. If they lose in OT, they are tied. Only if they lost in regulation would the Cajuns be ahead. So Sask gets the nod.

6. Each division/conference now has a B+ team. I might be jumping the gun in making UPEI a B+ team. But they are 8-0-1 since Christmas. They are still below the three other B+ teams.

7. It is so hard to compare Laurier (and Waterloo for that matter) to Toronto due to Laurier's freakishly good record against A teams and Toronto's freakishly lop-sided schedule.

8. Ranking Nipissing is also hard due to their lopsided schedule.

I really like your thinking but the one mystery to me is Calgary. They defeated both Manitoba and Alberta on the road. I think they deserve to be in the top 10 nationally an in your top group.

Calgary is very close to A level. But their overall record, category by category, remains below that of the under-ranked teams (Lakehead and Windsor).

This coming weekend they play Sask, and that will answer a lot.

Waterloo's record just to note, at your last ranking is actually 11-9-4, not 11-11-2. With their OT loss last night, they fall to 11-9-5.

Notes:

1. The Monkeys and Squirrels continue to be in a dead heat. The Monkeys keep the edge because with two games left compared to one for the Squirrels, the likelihood is that the Monkeys will end the season with the better record.

2. The rankings from #3 down in A level could invert completely from one game to the next. This was not a stellar weekend for the teams who were top of this list a week ago. Here's the summary, in order of last week's rankings:
#3 Urban Cowboys: beat Windsor, lost to York (in OT)
#4 UQTR: lost to Ryerson, beat Toronto
#5 Manitoba: split with UBC
#6 Saskatchewan: split with Calgary
#7 Acadia: lost to St. F-X and SMU
#8 Carleton: beat RMC
#9 Lakehead: swept Waterloo
#10 Saint Mary's: beat Dal-Lousy and the Cajuns

3. After losing to Guelph, Windsor cannot stay a category ahead. Windsor is demoted from A to B. There are no A- teams now. The B+ teams are teetering on the brink of A status. If I had more time I would take all results against B+ teams and allocate those 1/2 to A and 1/2 to B. For now, here are the records of A teams against B+ teams (note there are no B+ AUS teams):
```UQTR`````` 3-0-0
```Alberta````3-0-1
```Manitoba`` 2-0-2
```W.Ontario``4-2-0
```Lakehead`` 5-3-0
```Sask.``````2-2-0
```Carleton`` 2-2-0
4. Some footnotes on the CW teams:
(a) Saudi Alberta were on a 10-0-0 roll before playing Manitoba, then had a shootout win and a loss. After that they are 10-0-1.
(b) The Bedrock Boys schedule goes in nice convenient C-B-A segments. Since an early loss to MRU they have been 9-3-0. In the new year they are 3-3-0 v A teams. The A teams are 3-1-2 against them.
(c) The H0rny Ones are having a tough season. But their 3 point weekend safely has them above their worst ever season. They were 1-25-2 in 1989-90. They were 3-25-0 in 1988-89. True, those seasons were before the OTL column existed.
http://icehockey.wikia.com/wiki/1989-90_CWUAA_Season
http://icehockey.wikia.com/wiki/1988-89_CWUAA_Season
(d) The Bisons have ended both Alberta's 10-0 run and Calgary's 7-0 run. Between their losses to UBC they went 9-1-2. In the last 2 years they have lost only 3 games by more than one goal.
(e) The New Kittens on the Block were 22-2-3-1 (that's 3 ties and one OTL) in the ACAC last year.
(f) The Banjo-Cats only bad losses so far are the 6-0 loss to the Monkeys this past weekend and every game against Manitoba. Including exhibitions, their scores against Manitoba have been 5-0, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, and 7-2.
(g) The Banjo-Mutts have been a mediocre 4-5-1 in the new year. OT has saved them. They are only 2-5 in regulation.
(h) There has not been a playoff series in British California since 1970-71. To break that string they must make up the point by which they trail Calgary by defeating Alberta and hoping for help from MRU.
5. And some footnotes on the OUA West, the division that dominated the OUA East this year:
(a) Brock's 4-1 loss to UWO is only game of their's all year decided by more than 2 goals.
(b) Guelph is the definition of steady but not spectacular. Against the rest of the top 4 they are 4-4-1.
(c) Lakehead had the toughest schedule in the CIS. The division has two C teams. They have had only one game v Brock and two v UOIT. In the OUA-E interlock they drew two games each with Carleton and UQTR.
(d) Laurier is 8-2-0 in the new year to escape C level.
(e) UOIT has been on the down escalator, going 2-8-0 in the new year.
(f) Waterloo has had an incredible number of OT games, and have gone 5-0-5 in the process.
(g) The Urban Cowboys have made a meal of the lesser lights. Against the rest of the division's top four, their records are:
````v Lakehead 1-1-0
````v Windsor 1-1-0
````v Guelph 2-1-0

(h) Windsor was hanging on to the A level for the longest time. But the 4-5-1 record in the new year is a B level record.

(i) York epitomize the B level. They are 4-7-0 against the top 4 and 7-4-0 against the bottom 4.

6. I'll try to find time to dig up footnotes on the OUA East and AUS teams as the week progresses.

Holly,

One factor I often wonder about at the end of the season is teams "coasting" once they've clinched their playoff spot. It has to be a bit harder to keep focused when you go into a game knowing it has no impact. On the other hand, their opponent might be battling for their playoff lives. I wonder how much impact this has on top teams being "upset" late in the season.

We also know some coaches will deliberately rest players who are a bit dinged up once they've clinched, or delay working injured players back into the lineup. How do we measure this?

I don't have any answers. Just curious what other people might think about this, and how it affects the rankings late in the season.

Fortuneately, few teams are in this situation. Most playoff berths are decided but most are still fighting for seedings and/or byes. I could see myself using it as a criteria if two teams are otherwise even. On the whole I believe teams will play hard to the end since they will have at least a week off until their next game.

This is exactly what happened with Western last year. They had only lost 2 games in regulation in their first 26, went into the final weekend of the regular season with first place wrapped up and dropped both of their games (including a 9-5 drubbing from last place UOIT...UOIT!!). Didn't seem to affect them in the playoffs though. They are in the same position again this year, with the exception being that one of their games this week is against Brock, who have played them tough all year and who may be their first round opponent - I'm guessing they'd rather play UOIT in the first round so will be motivated to do what they can to make that happen.

Notes:
1. The AUS and CW tams, in the end, all had equal schedules against A, B, and C level opponents. Therefore the standings of those conferences intersperse easily for rankings purposes.

2. Alberta edges UNB by virtue of the point awarded for OTLs. A very close race.

3. The problem is how to intersperse the OUA teams. Even within a division there was a great disparity in schedules.

4. Although the numbers say the Urban Cowboys get #3 in a very tight race, I really have my doubts about their record.

5. Windsor could easily have been reclassified as an A-. I could not see Calgary in A level. For one thing, it would have created an imbalance between the CW and AUS with CW rated overall higher. Also, i saw them as marginally behind the other B+ teams.

6. It is noteworthy to see how the OUA teams have done against A and B+ teams. It shows why Lakehead belongs in A level:

Great list, top 10 especially looks right on.

If I had to nitpick, what puts York where they are? I see they are in front of Moncton. York finished with 28 points in 28 games in the competitive OUA West, but Moncton put up 30 in the likely toughest AUS (and Regina for that matter put up 29 in the likely tougher CanWest). York also at 7th in the OUA West, is in front of the 5th and 6th place teams in its own conference.

That is true. There were two errors in the chart I posted from my master list which I intended to post. I corrected one (Manitoba's record) and neglected the Moncton/York error. Moncton should be one point and one place behind UBC.

OHT35 - Ode to the Dearly Departed

LAMENT FOR THE NOT-SO-MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

In all of the CIS 28 of 35 teams make the playoffs. Whether that is too many I shall leave for another day to debate. I thought that in the post-season it would be of interest to look at the teams who failed to make the grade. Four were graded C, and three were graded C-. Here is the table excerpt:

Dal-lousy was the highest ranked non-playoff team. Their record against B level teams was quite good. One thing that stands out to me is that they only had two non-conference games. This seems too low for me. If they don't want to fund a pre-season trip to Quebec or something, at least they could rent the ice for a couple more games.

The OUA West was better than usual this year, and Brock was the only team to miss the dance. Their 4-1 loss to UWO is only game all year decided by more than 2 goals.

After being promoted from the ACAC to the CW it was hard to tell what to expect from the New Kittens on the Block. They got a baptism of fire, starting the season with a series against each of the Big Three. The fact that they beat the Monkeys, and then won twice against the Bedrock Boys, would make the season a success. When I saw them they had more than their share of large bodies. Time will tell if they will find a level of recruits needed to challenge contending teams other than the Bedrock Boys on a consistent basis.

The Stinkers were 2-6 in OT games this year. They missed the playoffs by one point. They are entrenched as the weak-sister of the three Quebec-based teams. That is odd since before the schools amalgamated Sir George Williams was always a threat. Still, the OUA East was weak this year and this was a golden opportunity to at least make the playoffs.

The H0rny Ones were the most disappointing team in the CIS this year. They had some valid reasons. Due to injuries they often played with 16 or 17 players. This should serve as a lesson to those in the AUS who want roster restrictions. Player shortage aside, it was obvious they lacked the talent to compete on a season-long basis against CW opposition. They will need a major recruiting drive to challenge the two Cougar teams for a playoff berth in 2014.

The Pids only had one more non-conference game than Dal-lousy. But at least they went south to face some NCAA teams. The Pids were supposedly going to improve this year. Yet they were one point behind the H0rny Ones, who had a disastrous season. If these guys want to recruit against their AUS cohorts they need to put together an attractive schedule. Why not a pre-season trip to Montreal? Or Ottawa?

RMC did not have a stellar record. Just think what it would be if they did not have 13 games against C level teams? We all have to wish them well, because in a sense they are a national team. It would be nice if they could at least beat Army.

OHT35 - Ode to the Dearly Departed - Part 2a

As the semi-final round wraps up, the OHT35 looks back at the 12 teams eliminated in the quarter-final rounds across the CIS. This post will deal with the top 6 of those, who ranked between #8 and #20.

Here is the chart with a second row added for their playoff record and revised season totals.

The Thundermutts had the toughest schedule in the CIS. With the OUA's imbalanced schedule, this is always a distinct possibility. Also, in the OUA-E interlock they drew two games each with Carleton and UQTR. Against the A and B+ teams in the OUA they had the best record of any OUA team, 8-5-1. Yet down the stretch when they started to play more B and C teams they were sputtering, getting mostly split weekends. So their loss to Waterloo was not exactly stunning.

This is a program in a state of turmoil. On October 18th a player revolt led to the firing of coach Joel Scherban. The Thundermutts were off to a 3-1 start in conference games at that point. Then on December 6th they kicked Thomas Frazee off the team. He had 7 goals and 15 assists in 16 games. This from a program which was once thought to be on the path to “permanent contender” status.

The defending national champion McGilligutties never seemed up to the task of coming even remotely close to defending their title. The inglorious defeat at the hands of a minnow like Nipissing emphasizes that McGill was not at all a contender in 2012-13. They did lose a lot of talent but the top programs always do so and use new recruits to stay at or near the top. The fact that McGill has fallen so far and so fast makes one ask if they were a top program or merely a one-hit wonder. Though they have been a regular participant at the U-Cup in recent years, that may be largely attributed to their relatively easy path. The OUA East is traditionally the weakest division/conference in the CIS. Of note, in 2011-12 the OUA East as a whole had its best season, and that was the one where McGill won the title. All eyes will be on the Redmen in 2013-14 to see which way they go.

The Jeremies were on the cusp of A-/B+ all season, like they often are. On balance, they had a pretty decent record. With a break or two they could have been in the semi-finals, and with a reasonable chance of victory and a place in the U-Cup. They had a pair of tough losses in their playoff loss to UPEI.

The Tweety-Birds had a respectable regular season record. They had a win, loss, and tie in a tour of NCAA teams. But in the end they were right where they have been for almost every one of the last 40 years – behind Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Calgary. They should be able to recruit a dominating roster every year. Will this happen now that they have turned thumbs down to the NCAA?

It appeared that maybe the Aigles had returned to their traditional national contender status in 2011-12. That was clearly premature. In the end they had a respectable record and provided a stiff challenge to Acadia in the playoffs. This is the lot of a mid-pack team in the AUS.

The former Yeomen were the epitome of an average team, which is what they have been for many years now. Their occasional wins over A teams were matched by their occasional losses to C teams. One would think that a big school like this could, like UBC, aspire to becoming a top level program.

Hollywood: I really appreciate all the work you put into providing us with all these stats but in the end they are just numbers and the game is played on the ice. I am going to take you to task on your comment about UBC's recruiting. Unlike the other CanadaWest teams,(Manitoba included) and the AUS, teams like UBC, U of T, Ottawa, Western and McGill all have higher admission standards thus the difficulty in recruiting players whose life focus to date has been hockey. Most players coming out of the CHL just don't have the grades to get into the top academic schools. Certainly there are other reasons like tuition fees and geography that have to be considered but teams can only recruit players who will be admitted.
