What could Montreal get in return for one of Tomas Kaberle or Yannick Weber?
With the signing of Subban and how good Markov and Diaz have looked, one of those two must go.
Ideally Montreal would get a forward in return, it might not be terribly sexy to most other Habs fans but I think we could really benefit from a faceoff specialist, preferably a mean defensive minded SOB.

I don't mind Weber as a 7th Dman.
I'd trade Kaberle for a mid-round draft pick draft pick, a 4th line plug or a 7th-8th dman with size.
I don't there's a team in the league that would be willing to take Kaberle's contract even for nothing in return.
Well, a lot of teams have cap space, 28 teams have 2 compliance buyouts remaining, and the other two teams have 1 remaining. Real money is real money, it would still take $3M to buy out Kaberle. But he's also a serviceable-ish 5th d-man who can contribute on transition and PP set-up duty. I don't know what teams will be in a position to need that vs. what $3M means to them... it will probably take another month or more and a little bit more clarity on just what Kaberle is capable of before we know. Only catch is unless the Habs get some injury troubles he might not get to show that. I can't see the Habs holding any of his salary back in a trade, though...
But I guess we'll find out. He's a pretty clear odd-man out in Montreal atm.
I'd take a 7th for Kaberle, still hold out for a 2nd for Weber. Not really expect to get either. Be ok if I ended up just qualifying Weber in the summer and buying out Kaberle.

I disagree with this. He was too soft on the puck last year, which led to breakdowns, and he certainly didn't have a complementary D partner. It is too small a sample, but I think he looked less timid, quicker this year. And he can still skate and pass the puck. I would need to be pretty desperate and have an owner writing blank checks to actually trade for him as a rival GM. But who knows. Habs traded for him when he was worse than this.

i don't think this is true. He didn't stand out since the begenning of the year but he didn't look that bad either. He will be hard to trade because of his salary but let's not go overboard here. He can still move the puck. I prefer him in the line-up than Weber.
If leafs go in tank mode we'll take Kabby if u eat half his cap.
I'd rather wait until the summer and buy him to get rid of his full cap hit. You can sign him to a 1 year million dollar or so per season deal after if you want..
Weber is less soft than Kaberle, that's saying a lot. It's basically like telling a 10 year old boy that an 8 year girl could beat him. And it being true.
I honestly thought last year that he did OK, forgetting the costly turnovers. He could actually pass the puck and receive it, he could also keep the play alive in the offensive end, which he has been unable to do thus far in 2012-13
i know he was consistently overrated for years but hes always been a gifted passer and good in transition. has he really fallen that far? or is it just time to pour on the haterade because hes older now? id do jody shelly straight up for him to come to philly and be a pp specialist

I think a 5th round pick would do the trick. The problem with Kabby is that he's very weak defensivly, and has had very slow start of the season. With Subban, Diaz and Markov in the line-up he becomes very expandable, as Weber can bring almost the same game and is our 7th defencemen.
Last season he helped our PP, but this season's first 4 games he has been very weak defensivly and has had trouble handling the puck.
He needs a lot of time to get going, when he was traded to Boston he didn't start to play effective hockey before the final. In Carolina he was pretty bad, and got better with the Habs, at the end of the season he was an acceptable d-men with good PP passes. But even at his best he's behind three guys who play his game and much more.

He has fallen to the point that he's a bottom pairing D(can play 4th in a pinch) PP specialist. Montreal needs the cap space next year and he doesn't fit on our blueline with PK back and the way Markov and Diaz have played for us. I think he'd be a good get for a team that doesn't spend to the cap and needs help on the PP/transition. Especially since Montreal really wont be asking for much.
Weber still has value. Mark Strait 'light'. the kid is young and can play - with a rocket from the blue line. he needs to play with a stay at home bruiser though. i think canes, detroit and ottawa were interested?

the flyers have had interest in kaberle before and now that hes a reclmation project im doubtless theyll be calling. the fact they didnt spend to the cap this offseason is also written all over our team so veteran help is coming, just waiting to see who isnt fitting in elsewhere. the flyers have contract issues so waivers arent really an option. seems to me like he could be a good fit at the right price
