How in the hell is that losing a war? Bergevin wants his players to succeed as well as his team to succeed. (Unless he is the Manchurian GM hired by Toronto.)

There is no war. Just a desire by both PK and Bergevin to succeed.
Double facepalm or not, MB has lowballing PK, no doubt about it. If he play well and got 6M+ contract next time, you and quite a few fans around here will again complain that PK does not give the Habs any hometown discount, and that he is a selfish player who only think about making money for himself, etc. It does not matter what PK will do, he will always get the bad wrap.

I am on the record on this thread stating that if Subban progresses and improves his PP game and continues to be solid on defense, he is deserving of a $6 million contract.........in two years.

Cap management. Bergevin is showing how to do it in order to get some much needed help signed onto the Habs roster during the offseason (or during UFA season). PK's 2 year contract will allow that to happen.

Is it ever refreshing to read that some Habs' fans understand the way the cap works.

Don Cherry says a lot of stupid things like:

Quote:
Don Cherry ‏@CoachsCornerCBC
Scott Gomez was signed by MTL 7 year deal 51.5 million in 2007 and suffered ever since
But I don't see anything about him calling Subban a burnt hot dog.

If it left a bad taste in his mouth he wouldn't have signed the contract or would've asked for a trade, it's as simple as that. He grew up a Habs fan, his family are all Habs fans... There was no indication he wouldn't sign the contract. He even said he knew all along a deal would be done.

All you are doing is speculating and from all accounts both sides seem very happy with the signing.

Bergevin has been very professional and stood his ground.

Much character and hard work has he brought to this organization since his appointment.

I'm sure this has been said already but I can't be bothered to read 722 posts (and counting):

I like this contract, especially in the short-term. It gets PK back in the lineup and the cap hit is low so it doesn't screw up the team's cap situation for the next two years. The contract runs out at the same time as many others, so there will be a lot of cap room available to give Subban his pay day, should he deserve it. It might end up costing the Habs more in the long-term, but the salary cap will probably start going up again in a few years, so that isn't too big a deal.

The only way this contract backfires is if Subban takes the negotiations so personally it negatively affects his play and he leaves town at the first possible opportunity. I think Subban enjoys the game too much for that to happen.

Currently, Bergevin has a golden crown on his head. No doubt about it. He is doing a fantastic job as GM and making tough decisions I certainly wouldn't.

In two years when Subban is up as an RFA one more time and in three years when Galchenyuk is on his first RFA, it might be a different story.

I don't see him not getting top $ if he plays at least as good as last year. Let's hope the black stallion lives up to his and everyone's expectations.

We shouldn't be judging a GM this early anyway. He has made some key moves but this is still largely Gainey/Gauthier's team, for better or worse.

Bergevin clearly has a plan and has made some interesting moves. Right now it looks like he's in control, and as a Habs fan I hope he knows what he's doing. But right now, he's the man. This team needed to move in a new direction.

OMG that is fabulous! I mean, like, downright INCREDIBLE!
You guys do realize that this could very well turn out as one of the turning points of this franchise. Bergevin has ballz.
I still can't believe it.
On the other hand, this is a grand opening for other teams' fans to tell us "see, he isn't that good, he signed at 2,85!!!!11"

He had lots. #FireBergevin was mentioned several times, usual Montreal fanfare.

Wow. I hoped that negociation would end with a two year deal, but I thought it would be at least 3,5 M$ per. Nice job Bergie, setting a good example for our young stars. When Gally reaches that point, we'll be pretty happy our GM stood his ground on this one. As for PK, he will break the bank in 2014, but that's perfectly normal, we should be happy to be paying top dollars for an elite dman. And PK will be one two years from now, I have no doubts about that. Congrats to him for being reasonable on that one.
