Wellwood is fast and can play good defense. He is a fringe 4th liner, but he does fit into Lavy's system well which is why I am surprised he got sent down.
I personally miss Powe for our fourth line. Him/Betts and Lappy were great.
i tjink it was odd that he had his best game before being sent down. i wanted to see how well his speed worked in laviolettes sytem at the center position
Like some of you other guys, i'd rather see Wellwood out there than Sestito or Shelley. Wish they would have kept Laughton as well. If the first 6 games are any indication, it's going to be a LONG 48 games.

So Wellwood currently has the highest "carry-ins" of anyone on the team. What about the rest of his game? I'm not saying he stinks or anything like that, but all that article says is that he carries the puck into the zone more than anyone else. I didn't notice him playing poorly or anything like that, but this stat alone wouldn't make me keep someone on the team, especially considering the fact that it is through only a handful of games. The article points to his poor linemates in support of the fact that he should be given even more credit for his number of "carry-ins" this season. To me that seems like something that would hurt this guy's argument (if his linemates suck, his only option is to carry the puck in the zone). Basically, this one stat is not all that impressive to me. I like Wellwood and I wouldn't be complaining if they sent McGinn or someone else down instead of Wellwood, but this stat of "carry-ins" in a handful of games is not something that I think anyone would rely on in calling a player up or sending one down.
I liked Rinaldo until he took all those bone-headed penalties in the playoffs last year. If he can learn to play smarter hockey he might end up being a pretty good 4th line guy.

Did you read it? If you're in the offensive zone, the team is more likely to score. Having possession of the puck entering the zone increases your chances. Wellwood was doing this basically with a bunch of hacks as linemates, and he was rewarded by being sent to the minors.

i hate when 4th liners get dismissed as dime a dozen. if anything is dime a dozen its guys selected in the 1st rd. they seem to be all over the nhl. but legit 4th liners? new ones every damn year. generational players like lapi and chief worth every penny of the million bucks they make. workmen with million dollar talents i tell ya million dollar talents.
If he's carrying it in and dumping it, that sort of negates the stat.
I rarely watched Wellwood so I can't really comment, and can't say for sure if that's what he does. I've been paying closer attention to other players.

i thought the 3 best forwards over the first 4 games were laughton, simmonds and wellwood. i understand sending laughton down because of development and cap management but i don't understandunderstand the wellwood demotion. especially after the rangers game, he pretty much dominated in that game. playing with sestito and shelley that line managed to play in the o zone during the majority of their time on the ice. he seamed to fill his role great.

Pretty much agreed. Every game he played, he stood out and in a good way. No defensive blunders and some good both forechecking and backchecking. Beating guys to the puck with his speed is also not something to be just discarded without additional thought, especially on a team that isn't really that fast to begin with. I'm not saying he was spectacular (except for one game, I forget who it was against) and I'm also not saying he should be put in a prime scoring role. But third and fourth lines are perfectly suitable for him, and I don't think there are options on the team that are clearly better than him for that role. From the middling gang that we have playing there (Talbot, Fedotenko, Rinaldo, Sestito, Knuble), I really don't see how he gets sent down to the AHL.
