Karl Alzner: Good as it gets?

Is this the best Karl Alzner will ever be? I mean what's his upside from here?

Are Caps fans happy with him and his progress?

Not trolling here, just a question about a NHL player who was highly touted.

Caps fans are more than happy with Alzner. While his play early on this season is not on par with what he did last year, he's still the rock of the Capitals' defense. While there's still some room for offensive growth (that likely won't be achieved while he's on the Capitals, given their depth of offensive blueliners), he's already a very reliable big minute, shutdown defender who has no problems matching up with the other teams' top lines.

He's not going to evolve into a Norris contender, mostly because he won't put up the offensive numbers or flatten anyone in open ice. But he's a very good #2 that virtually any team would love to have.

He's a solid shutdown defensive guy. About what we expected. Should have a long solid NHL career.

carlson appears to have focus issues. he is great when he is mentally locked in. as a rookie he was great. he relaxed for season two and sucked. he focused for the playoffs and was great. this season? loosy goosey again. he will grow up and settle down.

alzner with green looks all world, thoughile

alzner is never going to be an exciting player. he is defense first. he doesnt hit. he doesnt play offense to speak of. he is a mobile shutdown guy. on his game you never seen him

Guy every GM would love to have on his blueline, but gets little love from anyone who isn't a fan of the team he's on. Basically your typical upper-echelon shutdown D.

Kid has great mobility, positioning and stick work, but just has no "wow" factor unless you appreciate no-mistakes hockey.

I recall the scouting report on Alzner read that he was a "finished product" meaning that he was an already fully developed defenseman, no skills or frills, just a solid dman who can hold his fort. I think that's one reason why the Kings passed over Alzner to go for more flash. In a sense, reminds me of Scuderi. His defense partner or other dmen will get far more recognition, but he'll do his job quietly and help his team win.

Alzner on his game is already one of the elite shutdown specialists in the league imo, from the same cloth as Marc Staal, Rob Scuderi, Bryce Salvador, Marc Edouard Vlasic: guys who will quietly eat tough minutes and silence top players.

With age is going to come more consistency in executing that role.

Alzner is a stud. Caps fans are very happy about his play. Seems to be carrying Carlson for second reg. season in a row.

Regehr 2.0 with less physicality? Or Scott Niedermayer with less smooth skating?

Bought an Alzner jersey the day he was drafted. Calle Johansson was my favorite Caps dman as a kid, and he reminds me a lot of him. If you don't watch the Caps a lot you won't really notice him, but that is what is great about him.

He is off to a somewhat slow start so far this year, but he is a rock, and is the 1 dman I would not want the Caps to trade.

Sounds like Marc-Edward Vlasic. I think that's a adequate comparable.

Neither of those players are good comparisons for Alzner. He's basically a Marc-Edouard Vlasic clone. Just a solid shutdown defenseman who won't light up the scoresheet or lay big hits, but will neutralize the opposition and always be in position. He's the kind of defenseman every team needs.

Very unlikely.

No one gets better with age moreso than defensive defensemen. Look at the progress Scuderi, Mitchell, Hamhuis and Orpik made for instance once they hit their late 20s. Alzner is already playing like a top pairing defensive veteran thanks to his hockey IQ, and he'll only get better with experience.

I think he has untapped offensive upside as well, maybe 20-25 points a year if he develops it.

His upside is top 5 DFD in the league and the best partner you could ask for for guys like Doughty, Pietrangelo, Karlsson, Subban, Carlson, Bogosian, Harmonic or Myers.

Vlasic and Staal are good stylistic comparisons, but I feel like Alzner is/will be better than both, at least from hockey IQ perspective.

Reminds me of Wilie Mitchell, his offensive isnt there yet but mainly due to Green/Carlson/Orlov. He's the type of player that helps win championships.

He always reminded me of Chris Phillips when he was young. You have to watch a lot of his teams games to really appreciate what he brings/brought to the team.

So he's a Robyn Regehr in his prime type player?

I'd say a little less physical, but not a bad comparison.

Huge fan of Alzner, solid shutdown top-pairing defender.

Would kill to have him on the Leafs.

I don't see him play that much, and neither do I watch Vlasic, since he's on the west coast and I'm in Montreal, but I watch the habs a lot. The way people describe him, is his play (and Vlasic's) something like Josh Gorges'?

Even though alzner has sucked to start the season, his general level of play is outstanding. He would be a top pairing shutdown dman on nearly every single team in the league. That is a vastly underrated skill.

He's about as good as habs fans think gorges is.
