They're much more competitive to play against and the guys that are there actually want to be there. They've done some good things in the last year and now even going forward especially this year they've got 3 1st round picks. With Murray next year and whoever they take this year they can turn things around pretty fast
If Rangers or LA get a high place pick i.e 20+ they'll probably trade those two picks for #2 or #1. If they don't have #1.

With the top players available this year, they could really do some damage in the draft this year.
Looking at it now I wished Shero had asked for this year's 1st and not last years but I understand that the move was made then and they also wanted to draft the player in front of the home crowd

umm, they asked for last year's number 1 because it was 8th overall. Carolina added Staal and Semin. In all likelihood, we expected them to be better. Why risk a #8 pick when it could be 15-30 next year?

Could always move up once we own the pick. Anyways no big deal, just looking at the draft and noticed how deep it's going to be. Probably as deep as the 03 draft

Agree to disagree. That would have been a bad decision IMO.
Carolina had the 8th pick in a draft being held in Pittsburgh...there was no way Shero was going to prefer a pick in a later year with no clue where that pick would be. Carolina is a bubble playoff team in an extremely weak division, they very easily could wind up with the 3 seed.

In former Pittsburgh Penguins news, the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Predators 4-0 with Chad Johnson(Pens' 2005 Draft Pick) getting the shutout and Nick Johnson scoring a goal and an assist. poor asset management by Ray Shero yet again.
What difference does it make where the draft takes places?
I mean, it's nice and all to draft high in your own city, but I don't see the big difference.
Point is you take a guaranteed 8th overall pick over a very small chance that the next year's pick is the same or better. Carolina was instantly a better team than they had last year the second that trade happened.
There's always the chance that the Hurricanes could pull a Maple Leafs with Kessel...but...not really. The Hurricanes are a mediocre team with a great goalie in an awful division, the Leafs were an awful team with no goaltending in a good division.
You could also argue that a 16th overall pick in this years draft will have a better quality of player available than an 8th overall in last year's, but... I really don't see the point in doing that, haha.

You're lucky you had that sarcasm smiley in there or Joe would've "infracted you" if you know what I'm saying. Joe believes in Ray, and so must we.
Watching these games and you see how common it is to have your offensive stars on the PK. Benn, Eriksson, Alfredsson, Toews, Hossa. No reason not to occasionally use Sid or Geno to kill penalties. And not talking last 15-20 seconds of the PK.
