Vatanen will definitely make it in the NHL, but im not sure if he's ready yet. The problem is Vatanen is best suited for the role Cam Fowler has, and there's no chance Vatanen can take that away from Fowler anytime soon. Let him just play big minutes in AHL and get adjusted to the North American style.
Ppl are talking a lot about Vatanen's physical abilities. He added somewhat 8 kilos (~20 lb's) in the offseason, and i dont think he needs to add too many kilos anymore, but yeah definitely more strenght.
I don't see Fowler and Vatanen as being mutually exclusive. You need more than one puck mover. By "puck mover" I don't necessarily mean a skater, but you would like at least one person in each pairing who is good at getting the puck out of the defensive zone somehow (whether it be the pass, the chip, or skating it out). Honestly, I don't think we have enough puck movement. We have Fowler. And that's pretty much it. Sbisa can move, but has tunnel vision. Allen and Souray are pretty slow and can't pass. Beauchemin is meh. Lydman is passable.
On the PP, they also play complementary styles on the point. One can be a setup man/rover. The other would be a more traditional quarterback with a big shot. Vatanen is also a right shot.
I don't see any problem in switching Souray with Vatanen. At least give it a try for some games. Beauch, Lydman, Sbisa and Allen gives us physical, reliable defensive play, while Fowler and Vatanen moves the puck around.
Souray had great presence the first few games, but after that his lack of mobility has been really frustrating to watch. And have he ever - after his goal vs Canucks - had a shot on goal from the point?

Yes, BIG yes..Vatanen IS ready for the NHL.its not gonna be any "let him try always we can send him back to the AHL if hes not ready"..of course Vatanen is well known by anaheim superheads..he was only in AHL to play while NHL was off.. he didnt have to hammer super lot of points allright? still got some 25 just while surfing abit.
let me tell you oooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeee more time...this guy is amazing and hes gonna be bout best player in every game...why? he scates more and faster than any...with just this in mind and hell of a game understanding hes gonna be HUGE..
so enjoy the game..sing along and clap your hands..soon theres gonna be lots of guys,sons and mothers in THE ARENA w VAtanen-shirts lurking the game even more enthusiastic!
