To everyone talking about Bordy, yeah I agree he has been fine but I feel Malone could bring a lot more to the team especially on the PK.
I feel the same way. He hasn't been bad but why do we need someone who throws a couple of hits and plays 4 minutes a game? Malone can be trusted to play more minutes and like you said, he can play on the PK if needed. He doesn't shy away from contact either. He goes hard to the net, he can hit, he can fight, etc. I'd rather have the better hockey player in the line-up.
I don't want to get too excited about Sgarbossa because he was never drafted, and its not often an undrafted player ever makes the NHL, let alone become a Top 6 talent.
Happens more frequently than you'd expect. Sgarbossa only went undrafted in his first year of eligibility as well. The Sharks invited him to training camp and liked him so much that they signed him to a contract (there's a short window to sign undrafted North Americans with remaining draft eligibility).
Just scanning last year's top 50 scorers, you had Marty St. Louis, Matt Moulson, Patrick Sharp, Pavel Datsyuk, and Teddy Purcell who weren't drafted in their first eligible year. St. Louis and Purcell were never drafted. Datsyuk was taken in his third year of eligibility.
For some guys, things don't start clicking until later. Not everybody is going to be physically/mentally developed by age 18. Other guys off the top of my head include Chris Kunitz, Dustin Penner, David Desharnais. David Perron went undrafted in his first year then was snatched up in the 1st round. Johan Franzen didn't get drafted until he was like 24 (by current rules he would have been an undrafted free agent).
Devils somehow got 30 goals out of David Clarkson last year. In the past, we also benefitted from undrafted guys like John Madden and Brian Rafalski.

well damn, why bother with the draft then.
Id be interesting to find out how many of these
guys made it at an older age as undrafted players
versus drafted guys that get played at an earlier age
did that make sense?
Wish Malone had stayed up and Barrie/Bourds got sent back for a bit. I dont want to admit this, but outside of a few scoring chances in a row, Hejduk looks slow and ineffective this year. I'd actually like to see something like this tomorrow to start, and a quicker juggling of the lines if there is no fire again to start.
The Avs really, really need another star player if they want to become a future Cup contender.
I'm not sure if it's Sgarbossa but I for sure hope so.
He could become the difference maker.
I don't think Sgarbossa will ever become a star in this league. He could surprise, but I just don't see it in him. What I see is a player that can become a solid #2 center if groomed for that position (ie mostly play in the AHL except spot duty to develop how to play center at a professional level) or a player that could become a good 2nd line wing.
I personally see his max as a 20-25g 30-35a sort of player who can play with some grit as he bulks up a bit. Not a star, but the sort of player you need for depth on a winning team. If he keeps his game simple and just fires the puck from the wing he could score more goals than that. His shot is very underrated and he always seems to shoot a very high percentage.
