Contract variance does not apply to backloaded contracts.

The entire purpose of the clause was to eliminate the backdiving contracts during retirement years to drop the cap hit. This contract does the exact opposite as the second year raises the cap hit.

True, it's his side of the "win-win" scenario. Gives up a bit now to raise his minimum bar in the future.

I'm shocked at the dollar amount. I thought for sure he'd be getting $4+ million per year.

He had two options probably presented. This kind of contract for 2 years or the one thats 5+ for 5 million probably.

The players have very little leverage in these middling contracts unless they are a huge star. Subban is kind of in the middle. He's shown that he can be a star in this league, but isn't at that level quite yet. Holding out on his end is a little pathetic. I imagine he was probably looking for a bigger deal with longer years and it never came.

Edit: And i thought Montreal did a great job even though I don't like them.

Everything on HF is always overvalued from what fans think a players value is in a trade and also what fans think a player is worth. How many times have you seen fans say something like "That's all we they got for that guy" after a player is traded..

Hmm, that's exactly the reason why there was a "saga" in the first place, because he was signed for that low.

I can see why he was holding out. Montreal clearly took a hardline and said "sign this or don't play" and waited for him to cave since he has almost no leverage in this scenario.

Right now it looks like

2 yrs deal 2.875 per
then say
5 yr deal 5 per

which is fine, but if you put those two together and just signed Subban for a 7 yr deal

7 yr 4.4 per

You pay the same amount to Subban per year, you just get more of a cap hit these next two years, but instead save cap hit the 5 yrs after that, when MTL will be back to being a playoff team.
7 years risk for someone who still has to prove himself? No thanks. Bergevin took a business decision, a calculated move, not a gamble.

The sad thing is, after all the attention both this and the MDZ contracts garnered, most people STILL won't have a clue how RFA contracts work.

These numbers shouldn't be a surprise on a 2 year deal.

Bergevin also did not had a cap space thsi year and next year to open the vault for Subban. In 3 years, he will be able to give him a fat, long contract IF he deserves it, of course.

Donny Meehan said on Hockey Central that it was a unique situation given that it's a short season and it had not been easy to negotitate because of the lockout. So basically PK got 2 million for 48 games and 3.7 for next year wich is his real value. Also Bergevin promised them something bigger and longer for the next contract if PK continues to play well.

Not going to read the entire 18 pages so this may have been touched upon, but why does everyone keep calling this a holdout? Isn't a holdout when you have a contract and refuse to honour it and don't play because you think you are worth more?

Good point, not a holdout as per se.....a different type of holdout because he had no contract...

Great work by Bergevin.
Great work for what? Making sure he's going to be a pain to re-sign next time?

This is a bad decision fans won't regret, cause they won't remember for squat when he's either traded or decides to leave as a UFA.

fugly work.

You have reading comprehension problems. There is no implication that he'd be UFA in 2 years in what I've written.

In 2 years when the maximum length the team gets from arbitration is another 2 years, try remembering.

This is a great deal for the habs. He will sign a 6 year deal just like price and pacioretty. Habs did a great job. Bergevin is doing good so far. Stay mad

Well for the next two years at least you'll be able to keep your Subban jersey and Subban underwear. Who knows after that!

MB did a great job.

Explain how it will be harder to re-sign as opposed to any other scenario.

It's still a holdout because the player is still a member of the organization.

What holding out? Team owes nothing, player owes nothing, there is no contract.
They own his rights, But since no money is owed either way it's not hold out.

Look a orielly, he is not holding out, just took a contract in KHL since he didn't have one in NHL.
