Depends.

When I worked night shifts, there was nothing wrong with having a beer after work (which would be around 8-9am).

I'm drinking whiskey right now.

In my defense, I'm sick with the flu.

IMO, there are only a few situations where drinking before lunch time is acceptable.

1. Attending early sports game. If you're going to a 1:00 football game or 12:30 hockey game, then it's acceptable to start drinking early because the game starts early. Heading to the bar at 10:00 for the 12:30 game is fully acceptable in this situation. Same with busting out the beer and liquor in the parking lot for the tailgate.

2. Celebrations. Weddings, St. Patrick's Day, things of that nature. Weddings it only works if you're in the wedding and the ceremony is somewhat early so you're chilling with the family of the bride/groom having a few morning celebratory drinks.

Anything else and you're an alcoholic and need help.

Sounds legit. Sporting events, holidays, and festivals that are based around having a few. We have two festivals back home (one church festival, one city-based music festival) where they start serving beer at noon. I've seen more than a few people who have walked in as the gates opened who looked like they already put a few hours worth of work in. Not my style, but if it's a one-off thing on a weekend and ESPECIALLY if you're not getting behind the wheel later, then there's no harm I guess.

But to frequently sit around at 9AM and start putting down beers, I'm not sure that's something to be proud of.

If there is football that day, starting after ten means your late.

I went out for a late morning breakfast one time and had a blueberry beer with my blueberry pancakes, it was alright.

Kein Bier vor vier. That's a good old German saying.

(no beer before 4pm)

You can't drink all day if you don't start first thing in the morning.

I usually drink on Friday/Saturday nights so I usually have a couple when I first wake up to take the edge off. No biggie. Unfortunately, sometimes that starts the booze parade. As long as you keep yourself in control, IMO, there's no time too early. Hell, I made myself white Russian on vacations at 8am when I woke up.
