Datysuk-Chara Straight up

Let me make this clear, I'm aware this trade will NEVER happen, but I'm just curious to see what people think of the value.

**If a mod wants to fix the typo in the title that would be great.

Bad for Boston. They'll get more years out of Chara, and he plays a more important role IMO.

Value wise it seems fair.

Not accounting for age or cap or anything.

Interesting proposal, I think Boston would be less willing to do it than Detroit due to their centre depth.

Really? I've always thought Datsyuk played the style of game that lent itself to a long lasting career. Whereas Chara's physicality might take a tole on his body in the next few years. But if you're referencing the fear of Datsyuk running off to the KHL in a couple seasons then I guess I see your point.

Absolutely no from Detroit. Chara is older and, with his frame, once the injuries come, say goodbye. I would be very surprised to see Chara play until he is 40 (which is how long his contract goes until).

Chara's game isn't about skating so the drop-off there won't hurt him much, and he will never lose that reach and positioning. He's a fitness freak who climbs mountains for fun, so I think he can easily play until 40.

The only way Boston gets more years out of Chara is if Dats skips for the KHL after this contract is up in 2 years. But really this deal just does not work for both teams - especially Detroit. Take away Chara from BOS and you basically have the Wings current defense, but still have great centers, not plus Dats. Take Dats away from DET, and you bolster your D, but take away 50% of team offensive creativity. Detroit is not a Cup contender without Dats, even if you add Chara. The only way he gets traded is to quick-start the rebuild.

Value is fair, but both teams respectfully decline. Datsyuk is too important to Detroit, and Chara is too important to Boston.

Chara is an undisputed number 1 DMan in the league and there aren't many defenseman I would take above Chara at this point in time. Now, how many centerman would you take above Datsyuk? The value really isn't there.

I would argue that DET is not a cup contender with Dats this year (and moving forward).

Oh I forgot how much Boston needed centers... and have top pairing d-men piling up on the bench waiting for Chara to retire. Value wise it's pointless to debate 2 franchise players based on their careers compared to how one expects their career to wind down, team value wise it's just flat out pointless.

Crosby
Malkin
Henrik
Toews

About it really, and even that list is uncertain. This assumes age is not a factor though, which is what the OP is somewhat going for.

This post is way off, Detroit is easily in the playoffs with Chara. Even a wings fan should know how much a #1 Dman helps the entire offense, spending less time in your zone is a nice gift for the forwards on the team.

Getzlaf, Stamkos, Tavares, Giroux, Seguin aren't even worth mentioning?

Geez, I like Datsyuk but It'd be a toss up between him and Zetterberg in the first place for me, let alone many other prolific centers.

Seguin not at this point in time, but to list Hendrik but not Stamkos and Giroux seems weird.

While the value might be similar on paper, Chara may have more value in a trade because of his role as a no.1 D which, IMO, is now the hardest spot to fill.

Also, Chara's physicality has never been a major problem for him and don't see it majorly affecting him even as he grows older. The man takes physical fitness seriously and he has only missed 16 games (incl playoffs) in his 6 years with Boston. If at all, he can tone down the physicality and play a sound positional game and still be effective.

If you ask Chara himself, there are no players you take over Dats. See 2012 All-Star Fantasy Draft.

Value wise its fine but Chara is integral to Boston's success. Plus, Boston has amazing C depth as it is so they don't NEED Datsyuk.

No from Boston, easily.
