Timonen to a contender at the trade deadline

Assuming the flyers are out of it

Timonen is a good guy. Gives it his all every shift. Finnish god of defense. Getting old and this is probably his last year. Deserves a cup.

Raymond + 3rd + 4th.

Actually, not the 2nd. 3rd and 4th since we're still not going to win the cup.

I think you can get a 1st if you eat up his caphit for this season.

are you saying this would be the formula for a package or individual options?

Formula.

It is the standard formula for a top tier rental.

Although, if Kimmo is going to hang them up after the season, it probably won't be so much.

The Blues would likely be interested, as would pretty much every contending team.

The little bit of Timonen I've seen this year, he hasn't been nearly good enough to be called a "top tier" rental. I respect the guy, but he's lost a step or two.

As a Flyers fan, Im all aboard the move Kimmo Timonen train.
IMO hes lost more than a step, hes no longer as effective as he was known to be.
Other than the wrist shot he fired by Lundqvist last night Id say hes already played his best hockey.

If we could get a decent prospect package or a nice selection of picks in the upcoming draft, Id do it in a heartbeat.

As soon as Gustafsson's ankle is 100% healthy, he'll be up on the Flyers and taking some of that "offensive defenseman" playing time off of Timonens plate.
(edit: read that as of 1/25 Gustafsson was about a week away from a return.)

Bourdon is also recovering from a concussion and should be ready for a call-up to the Flyers sometime soon.

I would have to tentatively agree. Age may be catching up.

I'm sure he'd still pull a late 1st from top-of-the-league team though.

I'd offer something like a first and Caron for him to bring him to Boston and go with a line up of:

Chara-Hamilton
Seidenberg-Timonen
Ference-Boychuk

Hamilton has been bouncing between Chara and Seidenberg so far this season so who knows how the pairings will work out, might even go back to seeing Chara-Seidenberg in the playoffs. Regardless, I would take him into Boston as a rental for a run at the Cup.

I was thinking something along these lines.
Timonen would also help the PP.

I'd prefer if we got a young defenseman along with a 1st for him

Still makes me wonder why Philly insists on taking forwards in the first round when the likes of Hamilton, Finn, Maatta, Matheson etc are still on the board. Losing Timonen could cause the cup window to completely pass.

Lost a step or not, someone would certainly pay you a 1st rounder along with a decent roster player or prospect.

IF, and thats a big if, the flyers are out of it come trade deadline, they could get a heck of a deal for timonen even as just a rental IMO. guy is criminally underrated. but i still think they right the ship and easily get in the playoffs anyways.

We are terrible at drafting and developing D men and goalies. We know how to develop forwards. Holmgrem worries about Defense later

He is one of my favourite player but he has no value. After season 1994-1995 he has lost 7 finals and won zero.

Lost finals:

FEL
season 1997-1998

World championships
1998
1999
2001

Olympics
2006

World cup
2004

Stanley cup
season 2009-2010

Just kidding. I really hope he goes to a contender and win Stanley cup.

Think the value is decent, but I would guess Philly would rather a D prospect over another forward.

What side does he normally play? I can't believe I don't remember. Chicago sure could use an upgrade over Oduya come playoff time.

IMO, it's more like a 1st OR a roster player OR a prospect.

Combining two of those options (assuming the players involved are valuable) is overpayment on a rental. Boston got skewered for giving up a 1st and Colborne for Kaberle, and Kaberle had more value at that point than Timonen does now.

Look at the UFA list. He will be one of the top 5 guys teams would want. For a contending team being able to pick up a 20+ min d-man for the playoff run would be huge.
If I am Philly, and I am out of the playoffs, I see if he will go. And then to increase the value, I would retain half his cap hit. Im sure teams would LOVE a 3.17 million dollar Timonen!!
