Stamkos
Karlsson/Pietroangelo
Doughty
Eberle

Those are the pretty clear top five. Stamkos easy 1, Karlsson/Pietrangelo will be close. Doughty at 4, Eberle rounding out the top 5.

As a Blues fan and huge Pietrangelo fan. I still take Stamkos #1 every time.

What's happened to Doughty's offense since his sophomore season?

It's way closer than people are saying. Karlsson is the best defenseman in the world. Is Stamkos the best forward in the world?

There are a couple factors at play here. By far the biggest is the Kings' powerplay (or lack thereof). In his sophomore season, a good chunk of his points came from the PP. IIRC, the Kings' powerplay was in the top 10 league-wide that year. Since then, it's been one of the worst.

Another thing to consider is that he plays the toughest minutes of anyone on the team, especially now with Mitchell and Greene injured. I think people unfairly expect Doughty to put up monster points, even though his role is to lead the defense corps of one of the best defensive teams in the league.

Karlsson is the best offensive defenseman in the world. Besides who is the defensive equivalent of Crosby/Malkin?

That's very debatable. One Norris trophy does not make you the best in the world it means sports writers voted you the best defenseman in the NHL for a season. The Norris and Selke trophies have always been controversial as to always showing a bias towards offense.

I used to think it was Stamkos easily...and I was never a huge fan of Karlsson. Now, if I was starting a franchise? I would take Karlsson. He has more impact on the game than any player out there right now that isn't a goalie. He plays in all situations, and when he's out there nobody else looks even close to his level.

The funny thing is that people rag on him defensively but his defence is now at such a high level he makes the top players on other teams his *****.

Stamkos scores a lot of goals and is a great player, but Karlsson makes his team better than Stamkos does.

Karlsson
Stamkos
Pietrangelo
Doughty
Eberle

Thanks for the response. Hopefully Mitchell can get back soon and Doughty can flourish a bit. Hate to see offensive potential being bottled up.

Maybe the Kings PP will improve now that Kompon's gone.

Well, despite what the stat sheet says, Doughty has looked much more like his playoff self. When the top 6 starts to show up to play NHL hockey, his numbers should catch up.

Knowing what you know now? It would be hard not to choose a franchise d-man. I'd much rather build from the blue out, if I'm building a franchise. The issue is that d-men are very hard to project at that age.

I'll say this, his D wasn't awful in the two games I saw him in, and borderline good. Still wouldn't consider him shutdown-level, and I saw at least one pinch that led directly to a scoring chance the other way, but that's a risk I'd be willing to take every now and then if he were on my squad.

That being said... Seriously, the dude that's won 2 Rockets in the last 3 years and finished 2nd place the other time. The dude that has 11 points in 6 games this year. The Hart nominee. The dude that's scored the most goals in the league since he's come in. Not even remotely close to being close.

It doesn't work like that, even assuming Karlsson is the best defensemen in the world (which a LOT of people would disagree with), that doesn't automatically make him better than the 3rd best forward. Not a lot of defensemen in NHL history have been the best player in the World at any given time, more often than not the few best players in the World are forwards.

Yea it doesn't work like that, I don't even know why people even try to say something like that. The 2008 ranking still hasn't been set, and will change top to bottom for years to come.

Ya. Stamkos doesn't make it easy choosing Karlsson.
