Depends.

Some, like most of us do it for collectibility and or because they love certain players.

Others are dicks and just seek autographs to sell them to get big $$$.

I meant that getting an autograph from Malkin in person is rather difficult.

He seems to turn you down most of the time.

I remember in 8th grade there was a sports card club that I was in.. and we would send cards to organizations to have them signed.. I sent one for Lemieux and it came back signed..

as an 8th grader I was stoked and figured it was real, though I dont remember if an authentication was present in the envelope sent back or not, so I have no way of knowing if it is real or if it is a stamp.. My gut is telling me that is a stamp.. though I wouldn't know how to tell..

are there places that can determine whether or not a signature is real?

What is the probability of sending out a card to an organization and actually getting it signed and sent back? I sent out a lot of cards to be signed, but only ever remember getting one of them back.

90% of the NHL scribbles.

It is rare that you can make out anything other then their first initials then squiggly lines.
If they did not sign a number you would not know which player it is & often it is like reading braille.

If you want the cereal box nice autograph you usually have to pay AJ's or Frozen Pond for it.

I'd say your more likely to get it signed if you sent things to a team than if you were to send it to an organisation.

I'd be tempted to send some off to get signed. Or maybe a picture of the current team but I think the postage would be a lot from the UK and it would take a while.

That's what I've done for any of my autographed stuff. Be it my signed Lemieux pucks, my signed Letang and Geno pucks or my signed and framed Mario pictures.

I regret nothing.

He was nice to me when I met him. I asked him to sign a puck (SCF puck that I had he and Sid sign, and Babcock on the other side) and he asked if I'd like my jersey signed as well. Of course I did.

Postage for a photo from the UK to the US would still only be but a few dollars (or pounds, I guess). I ship to the UK on a near-weekly basis and even boat/freight mail takes around 7-10 days tops. That's not a long time. Trouble though is the wait for your letter to be read/returned.

I used to send letters and cards to my favorite players when I was a kid, and nearly everyone sent one back. To the best as I could ever tell, they were all real except Patrick Roy. The bigger names took forever to get returned, especially Mario. When it finally came I hit the roof. Even Gretzky's came more quickly. That one was definitely done in Sharpie, though whether or not it was autopen I couldn't say. I like to think it wasn't. Looked real enough, and that's all that mattered at the time :p Anyway, point being, your shipping time is nothing compared to the "wait" time for your request to be handled (which hopefully they do for everyone who writes).

I was surprised at how legible Matt Cooke's sig is, or that you can at least read his last name with no problem.

Dying to get Geno's auto on my jersey. Any opportunities now to get one? Does he do any signings around the "Burgh" or anything coming up soon? Don't care if I have to pay,but want to see him do it and not just send away to some company.

Your best bet is going to practices that are open to the public. I'm not a huge autograph collector myself, but I know people who have got Malkin and pretty much everyone else they wanted to sign things that way. It just takes persistence and going to the practices over and over.

To the original poster, this is a seriously awesome project. How much would you sell it for?

Yeah, I figured that. Going to have to hunt down some practice schedules and see when I can make the drive. I guess I was hoping they would do an announced signing...like I said I wouldn't mind paying for the auto as long as I got to witness it and maybe say thanks. Do they do any public signings? I guess Geno probably wouldn't.

I'm not a Pebs fan but I think this is awesome. I was very impressed by the way you displayed it. I also like how you sent the TTM letters with a purpose rather than just sending lots of cards for random players like a lot of greedy ttmers do.

I also think it's nice that you did the customs. I do them in photoshop but it takes a while and then u have to cut/glue the cards. Writing the letters can also get tough especially when you are unsure of what to say. I think Jim Morrison who played for the Pens is the only Pens player I have a ttm of though it's in a Leafs jersey. It is also tough to acyually get the autos of modern players since many just don't sign. I recommend sportlots abd the ttm hockey autograph proboards forum for anyone starting out. My favourite team is Colorado but I have not been able to mail them any cards yet because you need US postage for the return envelope which they dont sell in Canada.
