Why the Penguins do this - They pick up a veteran bottom 6er who can provide leadership and some grit as long as he isn't relied upon too much, and a legit top 6 winger to play with Crosby. Both are UFAs at the end of the season, so Pittsburgh doesn't have to give up too much, and don't give up any vital pieces to their future.
Why the Stars do this - Morrow needs to go, as he should've gone when Ott and Ribeiro were traded (part of that old leadership core that isn't getting it done). We also should try and get something for Ryder, as I don't see him returning after this season. Tangradi looks like a guy who just needs a change of scenery, and Bleuger is a solid center prospect who adds to our depth there already. Would only do this if/when we're out of it or if R. Smith pushes his way into the top 6.

Why the Canucks do this - They add a valuable bottom 6 forward who can win faceoffs, kill penalties, and be similar to Malhotra pre-injury, while moving out a defender who hasn't been all that impressive for a guy that should flourish with a reduced role. Not losing anything major, as the only whole opened up is filled instantly, and they add a bottom 6 forward who I think could help them a lot more than one would think in a shortened season.
Why the Stars do this - Robidas is being used as a #1 in Dallas, which he simply isn't anymore. Gulutzan won't seem to change that, so the best answer IMO is to trade him (he's a part of that leadership core, as well). Ballard seems like a guy who could use a change of scenery, and a Goligoski - Ballard pairing seems like something that should at least be tried. We can afford to move Fiddler with a hefty stock of bottom 6 forwards coming up all of a sudden, and add a pick as well.

I like the looks of that. We add some good pieces for the future without losing much in terms of being competitive, and if anything, we could end up being a better team after these moves.
Hmm...Maybe at the deadline. I'm inclined to keep Ballard for the moment, as he's been our best defenseman, and might be able to raise his value before being traded in the off-season.

i would only do that first deal if the Pens knew they could re-sign Morrow and Ryder. they'll need veteran presence that has some talent. Morrow is on a skid but he might pick it up with a change of scenery. i like Ryder for this current Pens team, too.
IMO the biggest thing Pittsburgh's giving up is that 2nd round pick and Teddy Blueger, but i'd still do it.

No, we mostly just want Morrow gone. He was more of a throw-in to get Tangradi and the 5th.

We could keep some of Robidas' salary if needed, and it's not like you're gaining 3.3M in cap. Gaining less than 1M total, actually dropping some if we keep his salary.
