It was a foregone conclusion that Schneider would be traded in favour of Luongo until the last 2 games of the playoffs last season. And all this Luongo speculation really arose out of that being the most recent sample that we had in our heads and we had a long summer to talk about it with no other games to swing our opinion. But really its something that happened multiple times across the course of the season. Each of them got hot at different times and AV rode the hot hand, sure playoff games are a larger magnitude than regular season games; I understand that, but I don't think the conclusion that Luongo is getting the axe in Vancouver is as cut and dry as the media portrays it to be. And Luongo getting the 2nd straight start tonight is a perfect example of that, again AV is playing the goalie that is giving him the best chance to win, and right now that is Luongo. And over the course of the season if AV feels Luongo gives his team a better shot at a championship, he isn't going anywhere.
I'm pretty sure that's exactly what AV told everyone during training camp, but training camp was such a blur I may be mistaken. That is also what AV did in the playoffs last year, in fact watching the Kings game on TSN they had a really interesting anecdote about how AV sat both goalies down in a hotel room in LA after game 3 or whatever it was. Is it as contentious as the media leads on? Probably not. Is it a freak of nature story created by a (8?) month gap between games? Yes.

Have you missed Gillis openly talking about trading Luongo as well as Luongo readily admitting that he's moving on?

That's just wrong. They were checking out market value for Luongo as early as last season's trade deadline. The Canucks organization *really* likes Schneider.

Gillis is playing a high-stakes poker game with Luongo. There is little doubt that Luongo must be traded before the beginning of next season. The Canucks are going to be strapped for cap space next year, and cannot afford Luongo's 5.3 million cap hit.

Gillis has to gauge when he will get the best return for Luongo. The longer he maintains his stellar play the higher his value will rise. If other teams struggle in goal or lose goalies to injury his value will also rise that way.

The risk is that Luongo hits a slump or gets himself injured...or other teams don't lose goalies to injury or don't struggle in goal. I have confidence that Gillis is a clever strategist, but this gamble could blow up in his face.

What if the Avs are the mystery team in the Luongo sweepstakes? The rumours are that this team is waiting on a player (2 if you believe Dreger). That could be O'Reilly and now Landeskog (injury). The asking price for O'Reilly is said to be a centerman plus a forward prospect. Colorado would probably not trade O'Reilly to the Canucks for a goalie, so they are looking to replace O'Reilly through trade elsewhere first, unless he signs.

Is this a possibility within the division?

Do the Avs want Luongo to split w/ Varlamov?

Would they be looking to move Stastny's 6.6 million to the Canucks in return?

Could we send more salary back with Booth or Raymond to offset the added salary for next season?

If not Stastny, would Colorado move David Jones?

Giguere coming back as our backup?

Would they add a prospect such as Hishon or Sgarbossa?

If Luongo plays against Chicago...the media is going to be such a pain in the ass for this team. Winning or not this is going to become a distraction eventually.

There is no way Gillis would accept a trade with the Avs centred around Stastny and Luongo. The canucks are going to struggle to fit under the cap next year as it is. There is no way that they can afford to add an underachieving $6.6 million forward.

I believe after this game Luongo will have now played more minutes than Schneider.

Who is our #1 again?

Luongo has a 1.61GAA 0.938SVP.

Schneider has a 3.13GAA 0.897SVP.

Just sayin...

Regardless of what management says, AV appears to be looking at our goaltending as a 1a/1b tandem and splitting starts fairly evenly.

I think the sample size is still far too small.

Like waaay too small...

Schnedier against LA last playoffs had. .960 save % 1.31 GAA

I don't think he fell apart over the course of 7 months.

I know you're probably being sarcastic, though, I am just no good at internet jokes.

It's all one big fabricated farce IMO.

Talk about a goalie contraversy enough until the media creates one..

They sent him down a little over a week ago only to call him right back up after one game in the AHL.

Have they sent him down again?
