Put Umberger on a line with Crosby or Malkin and he's a consistent 30 goal threat. I would start with a first rounder; or perhaps one of the Penguins' young studs on defense (Maatta, Harrington, Pouliot, Morrow) ... I know we have a lot of young defensemen, but as teams like Nashville and Pittsburgh have proven, there is never a such thing as too much.

But that didn't result in points or games won, you see. So he still gets to be the whipping boy.

Quick: name the ONLY Jackets player (as of this morning) who has a positive plus/minus!

EDIT: Still the only one after this game, too (and added to that), although a lot more folks are now even.

I'm not an RJ fan. You can have him. Tired of his slow starts and meaningless finishes. Don't know who's a bigger part of our future, RJ or his contract. A low first/high second or low second and a decent prospect would do it.

I'd trade him to Pitt for an ounce of dirt.

I had mentioned moving RJ before the new contract. I was surprised that Howson signed him to the term he did. Ultimately RJ will improve as the season goes on, but he has a NTC and we're probably not going to buy him out (almost no chance).

No sense worrying about it. We've got a lot of guys not producing, after all DD is second on the team is scoring. AA and Prospal are the closest thing we have to a top six guy producing, yet they are producing at a 40 point pace (for a complete season). There is a lot to be concerned about here. There are enough goal scorers that Brassard and Johansen should be getting some assists.

Agree.
He looks like he's been skating in sand last two games.
I wonder if he's been sick or injured and we just haven't heard.

I felt like tonight was the first game that he really hurt the team. It seems to me at this point in the season he is the only player on the team that has not improved since game one. I hope that whatever is wrong with him gets fixed soon.

Making twice as much, is locked up for much longer, and has one more point.

I know Umberger hasn't been good, but it's not like we don't have the cap space to have him here in the first place. He had some good seasons for us (I can remember numerous people wondering why he wasn't our captain before last year), and he's still better than the alternative in the system.

I think people are reading too much into this. Players go through hot/cold phases all of the time. Maybe he's playing injured? There could be something that isn't being let on.

Cold phase and injured, yeah seems plausible.

Except for the last 9 games last year he has sucked for the equivalent of a full season. True he was a good player for us prior to that but something happened. Big contract took away the hunger? Got old at a young age? Very long term injury? Tired of losing? Out of shape? Who knows but he is a different player.

Portzline made an observation on today's chat:

Quote:
Umberger looks exactly like he did the first 50 games of last season. He looks slow, like he knows where he wants to be but can't get there. He's never been regarded as a great skater, but it's taking him a while to get going. He's seven games in without a goal. Last year he didn't get his first until the eighth game. So very similar starts, and it's devastating to this club, which really needs goals. He's not alone, though. Brassard and Dubinsky have yet to show up on the scoresheet, too.
Problem is, 50 games and this season's over. With this being two years in a row, nevermind the lockout, I'm starting to question his off-season conditioning regimen.

Any of these are possible, and I won't rule any of it out. Just throwing out a secondary opinion.

But a 24-year-old wing who's 6'4" (and full of muscles) around 220 with top-6 potential but who hasn't found a fit in his current location would certainly be a discussion point.
Tangradi is terrible and useless I prefer Umberger before him.

But really I wouldnt Umberger now but Brassard immediatelly if somebody is interests in him... if....

Agreed. Brassard should be traded for a scoring winger.

I'm starting to lean in this direction, but I fear that any deal attempt we'd make would get us an overall downgrade.

That's the thing I'm just not sold on this said scoring winger. If we could net someone like Ennis in a deal around Brass, sure. I know this isn't the point but I like his game recently and believe we'll probably hang onto him for now.

Brassard still has an up side. RJ no longer does with this team.

We'd be lucky to get a 2nd round pick for RJ at this point.
