More stats from last year! Let me know if you want to see something else or need explanation, or if you just hate them and want me to stop.

Quick note: early in the year things are exaggerated, but they tend to regress to the mean.

2012-13 and On-Pace - this is obvious, just the current numbers and what they are on pace to achieve. Or I could project to 82 games. Or I could translate these numbers to this part of the season if it were a full season.

Actual Standings & Team Stats - this is the straightforward points earned as well as where the team stands in terms of league rank. So for G/G that means goals per game compared to the rest of the league...Wild are 18th, just below mid pack. Etc.

Pythagorean League Standings - okay, for this I've taken the most reliable statistic I could find to predict future success, which is goals scored versus goals against (well slightly more complex, but not much). Google it, it's from baseball. I've found it's 85% accurate in terms of predicting past success (not future), slightly worse than the fancy stats, but a hell of a lot less convoluted and more proven IMO.

I account for current points as well, so basically it projects future points earned based on past play, adds to the current points total, but DOES NOT factor in home/road, strength of schedule, injuries, etc.

Last year we did this to predict draft standings so it's league-wide, but I think it might be more helpful just to see the West? Let me know.

Based on our current play (not just the record), we're still a playoff team, barely.

Do you think 96 points for SJ will be enough for them to make the playoffs this year?

That's actually a great idea.

Although I'm not as big on Falk.

But we need that roster spot opened up, and Scandy isn't a top four D-man right now.

At a certain point some sort of development needs to be expected and the same old mistakes no longer acceptable. Every meaningful pro defender brought into this organization has passed him up at this stage.

Just realized the list is a year old. Sorry fellas. Was just skimming the main board and didn't see that it was an old bump.

Maybe I'm the only one but I've actually thought Scandella's looked pretty good. Yes he's had a few gaffes but I'm willing to attribute those to rust. He's been physical (which this team's been lacking), he's made good passes, and he's contributed well to the cycle. I think more NHL minutes and coaching will be good for his development and I don't think his presence is sabotaging the team.

I'll make a point to watch him more closely (if he doesn't get sent down). I guess I just don't see the negatives to the extent that you seem to.

In other news, looking at the month of February, we have 12 games:

5 home vs. 7 road
7 divisional games, including Calgary 3 times and Vancouver twice

I expect no worse than 8 wins.

Actually, Spurgeon's not even on IR, the roster spot already opened when Dumba was sent down. The Wild are at 23 even with a healthy Spurgeon.

Remember, the Wild started the year with only 22 on the roster including Dumba. Brodin made 23, then instead of putting Spurgeon on IR Dumba went back to Red Deer to make room for Scandella.

Way I see this "problem" is that Wild has now 7 top-6 worth D-men available, especially with Falk being the Good Falk instead of the Bad Falk.

What a horrible problem to have.

Personally, I've liked both Falk and Scandella's last two games over Stoner's last two games. If I was to bench anyone it would be Stoner.

seems like stoner is ALWAYS on his backhand and always stumbling. His only play at that point is chip it out to center ice

The pairing of Scandella-Falk has not been very good the last 2 games, but I can't really blame either player. Both are more comfortable on the left side and with a partner who's more involved in the play. Its better than Stoner-Falk were though the game prior. I think its pretty telling though that last night in OT Scandella played alongside Gilbert, indicating that Scandella is our 4th best d-man right now but Yeo needs someone to split up Stoner from Falk. Which one of Stoner/Falk stays in when Spurgeon's healthy? I think it depends on who his partner will be. Spurgeon's got more experience with Falk while Stoner's practiced and played a game with Brodin and has more experience with Gilbert. Scandella's got experience with all our RD as well on the other non top-pair(lots of last season on the matchup pairing with either Spurgeon or Gilbert).

I say then, put Scandella with Gilbert (Gilbert and Scandella were awesome at the end of last season) and put Spurgeon with Falk, and leave the top pairing be.

I don't see an issue with anything Yeo chooses to do as long as Suter and Scandella are our 1/2 LD and Gilbert/Brodin/Spurgeon are our 3 RD. If Brodin is playing like a top-pairing guy they can leave him there but if he struggles they can shelter him, the other 2 can move up. Suter's played with all 3 of those RD this year and Scandella's played with all 3 in his career.

Agreed...Stoner started great but looked very iffy to me the last few games. Scandy has looked unremarkable but not bad.

Just thought I'd bring this up... after years and years and YEARS of being piss poor in the faceoff circle... the Wild are finally not just a decent faceoff team, but a truly GOOD faceoff team!

We used to lose faceoffs all the time, and many would result in goals against... as a faceoff win in the offensive zone usually creates a scoring chance off said faceoff. Yet every time I complained about the team sucking at faceoffs, we'd hear how faceoffs were overrated.

Now that we're a good faceoff team, and have already in a short season scored quite a few goals directly off a faceoff and have only allowed 1 against in the same situation... the impact is showing!

Of our 4 primary centers, here's the faceoff% and raw wins/losses...

Konopka 60.9% - 25W 16L
Brodziak 54.5% - 60W 51L
Granlund 50% - 36W 36L
Koivu 47.2% - 69W 77L

Here's the guys helping out when a Center is getting tossed from the circle (Looking at you Koivu and Granlund! )...

Mitchell 75% - 3W 1L
Powe 75% - 3W 1L
Cullen 60.7% - 17W 11L
Heatley 50% - 4W 4L
Parise 0% - 0W 2L
Bouchard 0% 0W 3L
Setoguchi 0% 0W 2L

As an expert Lip reader I can say with 87% certainty that Konopka is trying to tell the blackhawks players the most efficient way to clean a carpet.
