The hockey gods have done this, they want us to win, by doing this they have enabled Zibanejad, Silfv, and Turris to break out and shorten our rebuild,

Thank you hockey gods for this divine intervention,

Praise the hockey gods!!!!!!!!

Without Spezza

2012-13: 2-0-0
2011-12: 1-1-0
2010-11: 4-12-4
2009-10: 11-11-0
2007-08: 5-1-0
2006-07: 11-2-2
2005-06: 10-4-0

Sens combined record without Spezza since Spezza has been a point per game: 44-31-6

Sens record with Spezza since he has been a point per game:

2012-13: 3-1-1
2011-12: 40-30-10
2010-11: 28-28-6
2009-10: 33-21-6
2007-08: 38-30-8
2006-07: 37-23-7
2005-06: 42-17-9

Sens combined record with Spezza since Spezza has been a point per game: 221-150-47

Points % without Spezza: 58.0%
Points % with Spezza: 58.5%

The Sens are ever so slightly better with Spezza than without. And the 2010-11 season, where Spezza was absolutely terrific imo, made a HUGE difference. Take out 2010-11, and the Sens record becomes better without Spezza.

The Sens don't miss a beat when Spezza is out. Half a percent better.

I really do think we are going to be in tough to make the playoffs. I'll bet on us finishing 7th/8th but not comfortably. Its a long long season boys and we are only 7 games in. We got 41 games to go LOL.

I think by the end of February we will know whether this team is a playoff team or not.

WOW - that really blows. I was rooting for you guys to come out of the East. I'd like to see Alfie hoist the Cup before he hangs them up. Hopefully you guys can stay in the top 8 and Spezza gets back in time for the playoffs.

Thanks for the warm wishes.

You guys don't look like you need a lot of help right now.

1.) Sample sizes
2.) its easy to be without a guy for a game or 2 here or there. That has often been the case. To replace him over an extended period? MUCH more difficult. See the last time he was out for an extended period, where we won 1 game out of the 15 he missed.

I like Mendes (I really do) but he has to be one of the most negative reporters the Senators have hanging around them... I just don't get the guy but he writes great articles.

The team will do just fine. I think the team does far worst when Alfie is not in the line up.

That would be crazy. Crosby wasnt even near 4th in NHL scoring last year.

No, I'm showing how useful a player is can't be determined by their record with and without him. Unless we also say Crosby is replaceable because the Penguins can win without him.

Thanks. I've always been a big fan of the Hawks, probably my favourite team that is not the Sens or Habs (my team before the Sens existed, don't hate me Sens fans, the Habs are a clear #2 to Ottawa now). I really, REALLY like the Hawks' chances of coming out of the West.

So Spezza has a history of back issues it sounds like. We have a lockout at the beginning of training camp for the 2012-2013 season, and instead of addressing this at that time he goes over and plays in Switzerland? Anyone else confused?

Some people here and on another board might remember 3-4 years ago when talking about trading spezza that I said another reason it might be a good thing to do is because if he has a congenital back issue, he might be out of the lineup more and more as he ages. Not saying I told u so or that we should trade him now, but.....

(I'm looking right at you here, Johnny...)

Ottawa has had to endure being without key players for long stretches before (Regin, Hasek, Havlat, Fisher, Yashin, Alfredsson, am I forgetting some?), but given the youth of the team, I wonder if Spezza's absence will mean more to the team.

I haven't heard when he injured it but he was playing well in Switzerland and moved well during the Spengler Cup. Maybe he just hurt it last game?

He was fine.

This sort of thing isn't the type of injury you can get preventative surgery on.

It's like saying: "Oh I have really bad teeth, so I should get them removed for dentures." No, you get your cavities filled/root canals as issues flare up.

Not particularly confident in our chances without him, but I felt the same last year with him, so what do I know?

Just no more big injuries to key players please, we're done with 1 more.

Every team will demand Lehner+. Do you really want to do that during a year where we aren't a legit Cup contender?

Due to the shortened season the playoffs this year will really be a crap shoot since players will get injured and they won't have time to recover. This will probably effect all the teams. His lethargic style of play won't be missed by me.

They probably should make a trade for a young solid center to replace him if they can. If not I believe the young guys will find their games.

General consensus is that Spezza for Couture/Benn would be a no from all three sides because:

A) Other teams can't afford him like we can
B) Other teams agree Spezza is the better player but would rather keep their young promising talent.
C) Spezza is injured right now.
