There aren't many bigger fans of Nifty than myself but even I had him ranked around 4th to 6th among RWers right now.....a good pick nonetheless.

At the very least he'll get the crowd out there seats with one of his near impossible goals. Damn he had great stickhandling and balance on his skates and so smooth and efficient with his release.

Third biggest heist by the Bruins after the Esposito trade from Chicago and the Neely trade from Vancouver.

We are pretty stuck here. I'll take trade offers for this pick over lunch and if nothing pans out we will pick then.

Les Nordiques de Québec are extremely disappointed by that selection. Longevity & competition level is the only issue the best and most complete defenceman of his generation have. He was also at the top of our list.

We think he's the perfect partner for Earl Seibert.

With all the super-stong 1st lines being built, we felt we needed to counter them with a strong shut-down pair, and that's what we think we have in Stuart-Seibert. Both guys have the size and toughness to handle the biggest and meanest power forward, and they also both have the speed to keep up with the speedsters. As an added bonus, they both have enough skill to create offense the other way or work on the powerplay.

We're pumped!

Always a debate on the Bruins board....but Neely usually gets the slight nod. (It's that rough n' ready thing). Middleton was an artisan....it's an apples and oranges thing.

In the 83 playoffs, he (17gms / 11g / 22 a) his CTR (17 gms / 14g / 18 a) and Bourque (17gms / 8g / 15a) almost singlehandedly put the Bruins into the finals but like every other playoff team during most of the 80's and early 90's, the depth was lacking or disappointing, (other than Park).

They lost to the last of the Islanders dynasty teams after yet another rough series v. the Sabres.

Hooley Smith, Brett Hull, Jarome Iginla, Pavel Bure, Punch Broadbent, and Rick Middleton. In my opinion there were other possible options at RW when you picked Neely at 85. What do you guys think? Does Iginla make the HHoF and does he deserve it?

Guess I'll continue the run on defensemen with a guy who I don't think is out of place here.

Pittsburgh selects D, Alexei Kasatonov

He was a Soviet League 1st team All-star 8 years in a row, 5 time WC All-Star, 1 time WC Best Defender, and 1 time Canada Cup All-Star.

These quotes are lifted from a post by overpass in the HoH defensemen project.

Jim Proudfoot, Toronto Star, Feb 7, 1987:
Quote:
Kasatonov, the 27-year-old right defenceman, came from Leningrad. He is a bear of a man, 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, and yet he is a quick and clever attacker.
Jim Proudfoot, Toronto Star, Feb 22, 1988:
Quote:
Soviet defenders Viacheslav Fetisov and Alexei Kasatonov are capable of transforming the New Jersey Devils into National Hockey League contenders. This was the opinion of several NHL executives who watched the redshirts demolish Czechoslovakia in an Olympic game at the Saddledome yesterday.

"They're both NHL-type defencemen," said general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks. "They're exceptionally good with the puck and they're tough. And they're great skaters. They'd have an immediate impact in the NHL."

Fetisov and Kasatonov, rearguard sidekicks for many seasons, lead the unbeaten Soviets in scoring here. After five victories, Fetisov had three goals and six assists; Kasatonov is two and six.

Iginla? Yes.

Again, I went with the playoff numbers goals/game and uh, his rambunctiousness....a quality I like in players.

Stuart and Kasatonov were both great choices. I know they are difficult to evaluate, but IMO they are both better than several of the D chosen before them...although none of those guys were out of place or bad picks at all.

I'm pretty sure any line with Bobby Hull on it is consider the first line. And you're pretty much naming an undrafted player right there. It's like saying B**** - Lach - Richard

Just a suggestion, we should change Serge Aubrey Savard to just Serge Savard in the OP. I nearly had a heart attack thinking he was available when ctrl+f for "Serge Savard" turned up nothing. It will save future headaches for people looking at the draft list considering I don't think anyone refers to him as Serge Aubrey Savard, just Serge Savard.

Pretty obvious reference to an undrafted player, took me about 2 seconds to figure out who you're talking out...
