It is an automatic ejection for fighting without a puck drop. Ref never dropped the puck and was tossing someone from the face off when they started.

This is the NHL rule:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26336

Quote:
Rule 46 - Fighting

46.1 Fighting – A fight shall be deemed to have occurred when at least one player (or goalkeeper) punches or attempts to punch an opponent repeatedly or when two players wrestle in such a manner as to make it difficult for the Linesmen to intervene and separate the combatants.

The Referees are provided very wide latitude in the penalties with which they may impose under this rule. This is done intentionally to enable them to differentiate between the obvious degrees of responsibility of the participants either for starting the fighting or persisting in continuing the fighting. The discretion provided should be exercised realistically.
Quote:
46.10 Fighting Prior to the Drop of the Puck – Unless this occurs prior to the start of the game or any period (see 46.9), a fight that occurs prior to the drop of the puck during the course of normal face-off, the altercation shall be penalized as if it occurred during the regular playing time.

When, in the opinion of the Referee that, specific personnel changes have be made by one or both teams late in a game and ultimately an altercation ensues, the appropriate penalties are to be assessed and the incident reported to the Commissioner immediately following the game for review and possible supplementary discipline under Rule 28.

I think we will have a much better period coming up........i could sense a little more jump there the last 5 minutes.......Plus i think the Refs will review that missed call and give us a little wiggle room .........

If Erskine doesn't get suspended for that, then there really is some ******** going on. I'm sorry, but sticking your elbow straight out like that is not "defending" yourself

As blatant and dangerous of a headshot you could throw, and no PP. that has concussion written all over it sadly.

Haha very good.

I didnt care about the ruling of the fight but that was one of the most obvious elbows you will ever see. Thats just crazy not to call let alone see.

The referees knew they blew the call, and had to throw the fighters out of the game or risk losing control. That's the short of it.

Edit: Unless that's the rule. Fight happened because of the fake.

The Caps announcer said Erskine protected himself or whatever and he agrees with the no-call, wtf, that announcer has to be the worst in the league.

Clement is besides himself with anger for the refs, if they didn't cut to commercial I think he would have gotten a call from the league. he pretty much called the refs bush league and said they went after rinaldo just because they can.

I thought the Caps were looking worn down at the end of the period. The way the Caps tend to disappear in the 3rd period regularly reminds me of the Flyers under Stevens when they weren't really in shape.

Hopefully the boys feed off of that Rinaldo fight and come out flying in the 2nd.

Oh and the officiating in this league is a ****ing joke
