Staal obviously was aggressor, he hit him in the neck with his stick and it could cause much more damage. Malkin was lying on his back, defending himself, Staal was coming on him.
What did Staal expect? He would hit Geno, and get nothing in turn? Staal would strike Geno on the right cheek, and he would turn to him the other also?

So because staal is wearing a helmet its ok to swing at his head? Well i guess its free game to slash at malkin's hands since he wears gloves.

There was no whistle. Malkin was digging at the puck/Lundqvist. Staal hits the player with the puck. Nothing wrong there.

Staal ran after him after the whistle because the guy took a tomahawk swing at his head and he was incensed

Staal hit Malkin with his stick three times (plus one time his hit missed) before hitting him in his neck :

The hockey player it's own way of rejecting legitimate slashes.

Apparently you can. You can slewfoot too, so long as you have the right crest on the front and name on the back. Ask Gaborik about that from last night.

Hockey play, move on. Besides, Geno can't let Staal take these repeated cheap slashes at his wrists, he was clearly provoked.

I can't believe people are defending the stick swing at a head vs a slash on the wrists.

It's not even close to being in the same stratosphere, and should be treated differently for precedent if nothing else.

HF is a funny place sometimes.

I wouldn't care if Malkin got suspended. It sets a precedent that if you're gonna play dirty he can do it right back. He has to protect himself. You know the refs aren't.
Keith Jones preached the word last season. Malkin isn't allowed to protect himself.

It should probably get a game, but let's cut the "It was dangerous" nonsense. That smack on the helmet is not nearly as dangerous as a two-hander across the wrists a few seconds before. But it should have gotten a five and maybe a game or two. The slash should also have been a major. Both dirty plays.

Oh, is that what happened Gaborik? Surely there would be a video of it?

That's...unusual.

Having said that, it's over now, I don't really care what happens. It was an exciting part of an otherwise horrible NYR game.
I'd normally agree, but because it was such an off balance and awkward swing I think the refs would usually just ignore it as a punch attempt while he was still holding the stick (which happens disturbingly frequently). I'd guess they'd both get 2 minutes. Maybe 2 for slashing 2 for roughing each just to let em cool off more.

He should get 4 games at the minimum. He will get 1 or none for being a star player.

Next time the Rangers player takes a chop at someone's head you can feel free to complain about it.
