2013 Draft Discussion (Mar. 29 article, post #976)
Right now (February 1st) the Flyers are #29 in the league with three more games played than the league's worst. That puts the team high in the running for a lottery pick!
Right now, here are the projected top players (as ranked by ISS):
1. SETH JONES D 6'4 208 R Oct. 3/94 Portland WHL
2. NATE MACKINNON C 6'0 182 R Sep. 1/95 Halifax QMJHL
3. JONATHAN DROUIN C 5'11 185 L Mar. 27/95 Halifax QMJHL
4. SASHA BARKOV C 6'2 205 L Sep. 2/95 Tappara FinE
5. SEAN MONAHAN C 6'2 186 L Oct. 12/94 Ottawa OHL
6. ELIAS LINDHOLM C 6'0 181 R Dec. 2/94 Brynas SweE
7. VALERY NICHUSHKIN F 6'4 196 L Mar. 4/95 Chelyabinsk RusS
8. RASMUS RISTOLAINEN D 6'3 203 R Oct. 27/94 TPS Turku FinE
9. NIKITA ZADOROV D 6'5 230 L Apr. 15/95 London OHL
10. DARNELL NURSE D 6'4 189 L Feb. 4/95 Sault Ste. Marie OHL
Obviously, Seth Jones would fit the team's needs perfectly, but he might be out of reach.

I don't know... I wouldn't want to pass up a chance on one of the top forwards by drafting for need. Although I want Jones the most, I'd still cream if the Flyers drafted someone like MacKinnon, Drouin or Barkov.
The top 4 of this draft all look like surefire superstar level players. After that, you have a bunch of great players who in normal years would be top 10 picks well into the early 20's with a ton of depth well into round 3. If the Flyers are going to tank, they picked a great year to do it.
I think this year is going to be like last year a lot of defensemen off the board early. If we were to be sellers at the deadline and some how fetch a late 1st round pick, I would really want Ryan Hartman out of Plymouth in the OHL.

I think the opposite IMO. A lot of teams drafted dmen last year and will probably want to get in on the forwards before their gone. One guy I want the Flyers to take in the 2nd is Samuel Morin. He is 6'6', can skate, and looked like he's got some puck skills. Could be the steal of the draft.

Yeah I said in a thread a week ago he could be sleeper for late 1st or early 2nd round guy. I thought he played well at the prospect game for being a less talked about prospect. He's pretty tough kid too. He can really throw em.
I hope the guys in the room don't have the same attitude as the hfboards posters.
They can't be feeling really good right now. They can't score, they can't play defense. Their powerplay is powerless. The coach looks like he is being tuned out. They probably have a pretty crappy attitude/mindset right now.

If this continues, Timonen and Briere might get picked off by contenders. I doubt we would get a first for either of those. Even a high first. I guess a 2nd and a prospect?

With being able to retain some of the cap hit now that may drive up kimmo's value a bit.

2nds this year have tremendous value. This draft is being compared to 2003 for its depth. 2nd rd picks that year: Loui Erickson, Kevin Klein, Patrice Bergeron, Matt Carle, David Backes, Jimmy Howard, and Shea Weber. The Flyers could restock their entire system with star quality players if they play their cards right.....or they will dump all their picks and prospects in a feeble attempt to make the playoffs this year.

Flyers should definitely be able to get a first for Kimmo. Kaberle got a 1st, top prospect and conditional 2nd in 2011, and Timonen a far better player (even if Kaberle was younger).

The only thing this draft is missing is quality goaltenders outside of Fucale (who I'm not that crazy of) but the flyers have bigger needs to be taking a goalie early. So I think we'll be fine on that front.
