Last Decade and a Half of Expansion

After all the Fire MacLean post I was curious as to how other recent expansion teams faired in their 4th year

San Jose (Minus Strike Year) 20-55-7 47 Points

Tampa Bay 38-32-12 88 Points

Ottawa 18-59-5 41 Points

Anaheim 36-33-13 85 Points

Florida 35-28-19 89 Points

Nashville 28-41-13 69 Points

Atlanta 31-39-7-5 74 Points

The Jackets are on pace for a 23-42-11-6 record for 63 Points. Now arguably the teams that have enjoyed the most prolonged success in the NHL are the teams with the lowest point totals in their fourth year(San Jose, Ottawa). San Jose has since faded, but Tampa Bay started out quick and then they had many many dry years, as did Anaheim and Florida. Food for thought.

Thanks for the research. San Jose faded last year, but have been playing fairly well so far this year.

with the exception of San Jose, did any of those teams steadily get worse since their 1st Year?

Florida and Anaheim both came in the league and were respectable. Then in about there 5th or 6th year slid. Florida still hasn't come out of their slide, and Anaheim is turning the corner. Nobody came in with a real gradual slide, but the teams that were in the middle of the pack, had many bad season to follow.
