Just wanted to echo n72 post ^^. +1

Each opponent brings a different scenario and Carlyle puts the Leafs in the best position to succeed.

Would get injured.Part of the game is physical presence. While Aucoin was a loss for the Marlies,Connolly doesn't do anything better than anyone now in the lineup. If you have 9 good forwards you can afford specialists/grinders.

Scott fought Thornton in 3 minutes into the first period. No goals were scored until the 2nd period where the Bruins held a lead for most of the period. They fell apart in the 3rd. It was simply a bad game by the Bruins. Scott destroyed Thornton in the fight and the way it hurt the Bruins was that he was lost for the remainder of the game costing the B's the ability to role 4 lines which they love to do. They also lost Paille in that game. But that was at the end of the night. What I'm saying is the fight help the Sabres win but not in the way your trying to say.

How is Devane coming along?

He put up some solid numbers in the OHL while he played out his junior career, he was an over aged player his last season and the numbers are perhaps not mouth watering but compared to Orrīs junior statistic he is like Gretzky.

Can he develop in to a reliable enforcer able to take regular shifts while also adding that heavy weight presence?

Carlyle isn't just going to come out and say "We got him solely because of his physical presence". He has to say that McLaren can contribute in other ways.

That's a possibility but in his first game other then maybe throwing a few bombs, my expectations aren't thru the roof for this guy.

Oh without a doubt. I don't expect anything but just a fight and that's it. Don't expect any flash or puck moving skill at all

not surprised with this pickup...big boy just like scott from the Sabres (Orr KO'd) so now this kid can learn from one of the best (active) in the business on how to lay down the law! With our young guns starting to fire on all cylinders he would provide protection that we wont have past this year (supposing Orr retires) not to mention if we draft really high and land Mackinnion Jones Drouin Domi etc there will be a need for a player like Mclaren.

On a differents subject...Im waiting for the Luongo rumors to start up after tonight. Bruins had our number last year and I attribute it to team defense and Wilson's trade chances style. Randy style of game I think we have a good chance...I would like to see a fight early....and hopefully win the bout to knock Boston off its game; however if we get blown out or Reimer lets in a softy or 2 and we lose the Luongo rumors will start again. I will say Gillis looks like a huge idiot now....saying Schneider is the number one and Luongo has all but snatched that away from Cory already...I think Cory could be the guy but not as long as Luongo is around.

Perfect...we need a guy to replace Orr for next year and this guy is huge. Im very pleased at how Kadri and Frattin have stepped up this year. Frattin's rise hasnt shocked me..we saw glimpses last year, just had to figure out the NHL....and he still obviously hasnt reached full potential. Kadri has surprised me though...he has always had the talent but every time he was called up (shootout exception) he never did well. I really believe that Kadri and Randy have a good thing going and Kadri is fully on board with how Randy wants him to play and for that reason Kadri is showing why he went so high in the draft...finally

You sound like a member of the Toronto knee-jerk media. Bringing in Luongo would be like bringing in a Gerber again...only the pain could last for 10 years.

That and Luongo would likely get us to the playoffs 5+ of the 9 years left on his deal.

That's if he's lucky enough to get us their. At best luongo will make us a 9th-10th place team for the next 2 years. Then if he's lucky he'll get us 3 years of playoffs. Then we have his contract hinder us from making any moves at all. This is just the lucky part. The more likely situation is that he gets us to 9th - 10th spot for the next 5 years. Then he retires and leaves us with his cap hit. We also lose some prospects just to get him.

Are you comparing Martin Gerber to Roberto Luongo? Jesus.

If he can goad Chara into a fight, it's a good trade off.

If I have to explain.... Luongo will make the Leafs better, maybe even to get into the playoffs....but will not be enough to get us anywhere near the cup (the team is too deficient in many other areas). Luongo is not young enough to be part of solution a few years in the future when the Leafs might be able to contend - given Nonis builds the team well. Not to mention how many assets Luongo will take away from the team to acquire him and his contract which will keep on taking away future cap flexibility. So like Gerber who was a end of season quick fix that only accomplished getting us a lower draft position, Luongo will improve us a bit for a few years, but not enough to win the big prize and only hamper the team to acquire better assets. Of course if you don't believe in the draft as a way to build a team, then...whatever. Hope that helps you understand my earlier post.

I wish they gave him a different number. Is 38 the official number of the understudy goon on this team?

You are not going to get wow'ed by McLaren's hockey skills, but the guy skates pretty well for his size and can play a regular shift without being a liability.
