Will we be targeted nightly?

I wonder if the many teams which we basically ran over the past few seasons are going to go out of their way to get even?

Lets face it, Buffalo was one of many teams that were out-hit, out-fought and basically bullied all over the ice over the past 3-4 seasons.

I think what happened the other night is going to have some serious payback attatched to it as well. I understand that we still have a tough team, but to expect Lucic and Chara to fight every game is nuts. Mcquaid is pretty much a middleweight and Macdermid is unproven. Montreal and Toronto, for example, have gotten tougher basically to compete with us.

I don't think we need to go out and get a 3 min per game thug. We should begin exploring a trade for a capable guy thats capable of playing a regular shift. I also think we're going to see lines 1-3 overplayed while Macdermid plays very limited minutes. I would call CBJ to see if Jared Boll is available.

Anyways, Thorns injury is going to have a major impact on how our team plays and responds. I think we are very vulnerable. Hopefully teams don't go out of their way to take anvantage of our sistuation.

I hope so. Honestly.

Give the boys something to look forward to. When we play physical, we play better. When we don't, we look terrible. If we want to go out and be the 'big bad bruins' which we have been for a few years now, we'd have to expect sometime that someone would not take it anymore. Scott was it for the Sabres. And what was frustrating was the fact nobody really picked up the physicalness of the rest of the game. Sure, seeing Sugar go down was a blow, but did we honestly expect a different outcome? You gotta fight fire with fire.

And if teams are going to come out thinking that they can do what the Sabres did, then I say bring it on. They'll be sorry. We play better when we're pissed off. And I hope to see Lucic snap and fight Orr tomorrow. I want to see how he's progressed in a few years, and is healthy. Instill some fear back into the teams. It'll be good for us.

Personally I think Thornton has little to do with the overall toughness the Bruins have had the past few years. He only fights designated fighters by the designated fighters code, and he`s not all that good at body checking. The other designated fighters in the league only play a few minutes, just throw Lane out there for that.

what did the sabres do, really?
besides a tired Bruins defense and alot of bruins mistakes, the only thing different from any other game against them was some giant bundled thornton.

scott is a monster and there is no way around that, but pretty much every other player will know what to do the next game we face them. this is not an issue.

Or we just blew some high quality chances and were sloppy defensively when we couldn't afford to be.

teams have gone and gotten their heavies. sure it is possible someone will want to engage in a fight especially teams that have focused on building toughness into their identity.

2-way play, pk, blocking shots, delivering hits.... the whole system is what ultimately makes the bruins tough to play against.

so some other teams got tough, good on them... they addressed that, still does not change the fact that the bruins are tough to play against.

Thornton's fight was an uneven fight. Absolutely granted. Besides that I don't think we were "targeted"

BUT

In retaliation we put a throw away player against one of their skill players with 13 seconds left in the game.

MAYBE, MAYBE if we didn't do **** like the above this wouldn't need to be a discussion.

personally don't like Lindy leaving the skill guys on after it is over to begin with. But there are stiff sanctions for teams that engage in altercations at the end of games. nor do CJ teams have a history of that.

you can't say we want to set the tone that we're not scared anymore and then say, yea with 14 seconds left, i got scared something would happen. there is another home game in boston to be played... we'll always have last line change during that game. it really is a non-issue but i would rather the B's just deal with it on the ice. I don't buy into Ruff's explanation as much as others do, but hey... that's just me.

i'm experiencing either a brain aneurism or de ja vu (and not the movie).

it was one fight, in one game.

historically, the Bruins play better when they're pissed off. so if teams want to 'poke the bear' than so be it.

People are overreacting a little too much, no?

The loss against buffalo came because for some reason they decided to not play defense and the fight was a mismatch.
I dont think we will be trageted more than we already are or have been especially since the cup.

With that being said, im a boll fan and wouldnt mind seeing him replace thorts sometime.

If every team adjusts their game to Boston's style we've already won.

Until it was 7-4 the game wasn't "over". SO until .14 was left there was reason for skill players to be on the ice.

SO we put lane mcdermaid on, a complete throw away player. We really don't care what happens to him. If he gets suspended why do we care? Mind you across from one of their top players.

This would be like putting Scott up against Seguin at a time prime for a fight.

Although almost 2 years removed from a Cup win, this team is almost identical to the one that won it, plays the same style so yes, they will always be a target.

This team doesn`t need a thug who can`t take a pass, give a pass, or contribute in any way other than his knuckles IMO. It would be wise for Chia and Cam to instruct the scouts to be on a light mission to begin the search for a guy who can play and protect such as Thornton, problem is, harder to find than some make it to be.

Either way, the Sabres game seems to have alot of folks here in full blown panic mode.

Scott won his fight
The B`s were in absolute command of this game up 3-1, then took 2 penalties at the same time, Vanek with a sublime tip in, then the defensive lapses began. A very rare thing to watch a Julien coached team play such poor defense but.......as I have watched this team do for years now under Julien, they leave the last game in the past and play a much tighter game moving forward.

They face adversity now with injuries, show me a team who isn`t or won`t be. Injuries or not, they "should" beat the Leafs tonight but who knows

Honestly I don't want to see the Bruins having staged fights.

I want the teams we oppose to stick their heavy weights who can't play hockey on the ice and make them play defense. Let them chase our heavies around the ice begging them for fights.

I good physical game keeps the Bruins engaged.

What I am more concerned about is the terrible reffing. This season has seen some of the most horrible, inconsistent and just atrocious calls.

I don't care if the Sabres have Scott, but I do care that the NHL can't seem to hire refs who can call a game consistently.

Very vulnerable. The Boston Bruins are very vulnerable.

Good grief. Thank God this team has more intestinal fortitude than some of its fans.

I certainly can't get into Claude Julien's head; but I can't think of any instance where he would put someone on the ice to jump a star player. The notion that he did this strikes me as ridiculous.

We will not be targeted at all... I just wonder who will step up when we need a spark or who puts somebody back into place on the opposition when needed... Plenty of guys to do it, just wonder who it will be. There were two blatant elbows thrown after #22's departure and nothing...Team just seemed very preoccupied. Worst game they have had defensively in a couple years it seemed.. Coincedence? I guess.

He didn't.

Ruff was being an jerk.

If you consider the numbers, Julien had just played his top 2 lines plus the additional forward hard to try to score a goal with the goalie pulled.

When the ENG was scored he sent the freshest forwards he had. McDermid no way, no how was going to be on the ice with the goalie pulled, but he wasn't going to do any damage in 13 seconds either (damage to the B's that is).

Well said.
this is a total overreaction of the part of the OP. Guys get hurt all the time....teams dont always play with all their best players.

Dude...relax.

You're too logical.

Exactly right. As SPV said, that is not and has not ever been Julien's M.O. Ruff knows that - he can't be that stupid - so you're right, he was just being a richard. No surprise.

A few impressions from the responses. One- I think people greatly underestimate Shawns role and what he brings to the team. Two- is lane macdermid ready for this because he will be the guy that is "targeted". Three- reminds me of the "we will be be fine while Horton is out" from last year. Some very smug responses.

To a degree I think you are right- just as to a degree opposing teams are happy not to see Tim Thomas in net.

Injuries to guys like Mcquaid and Thornton will have repercussions but I dont think it is to the extreme you are thinking. Adversity to this team is a good thing.

Personally, I would be WAY more concerned about the + - stats of line 3 and 4. Down right awful for a CLODE team thus far.

we still have plenty to go if we need.

I bet next time a Gigantor comes knocking, We might actually see Marchand just goad the guy into a penalty - or Chara might actually drop the mitts again.
