Vatanen is a lot of fun to watch. Kinda like Fowler (Obviously not nearly as polished) with his speed, and high end offensive ability. The one thing that he has that Fowler doesn't is that booming shot. That's why him and Fowler are going to be a dynamic PP combo.

Cam is in a league of his own.
Sorry eenok, but Cam is looking more and more like a young Scott Niedermayer every game, his defensive play has tremendously improved. Whenever he has the puck you know he's not gonna do anything stupid

Vatanen played great first game... No stupid mistakes, and what a hard good passes in that first PP.. and good hard shots during the game. Solid passes in the center ice too / plays.. looked really confident, like knowing he will be good also in the NHL. Didin't try anything fancy. But will he get to play alot this season? Somehow, I have a sad feeling that not yet, even thought he would probably deserve it, if he continues like this.. And why wouldn't he. That was just a basic game from Vatanen, from what I've seen.. And he didin't seem to been running out of time or space or being late ect.. he's skating is good to the NHL and it helps.

OT From the finnish NHL-fan point of view, sadly Granlund haven't been that confident yet and he's skating isn't helping him like vatanen has. Though't neither has Mikaels linemates been carrying them

I thought you might be interested of Vatanen's first comments after the game.

”It was fun to play and I have been waiting for this for a long time. It went surprisingly well, I have no complaints. I was expecting to be more nervous than I really was. I expect to improve my game for the next game but this is just the beginning. The challenge is to be consistent in every game especially since there's so many game in so little time. You have to be consistent especially since it seems to be difficult for a young player to be consistent. I have to pick up from I left of today."

He also said it was a amazing to play with his Selänne and Koivu, both players he looked up growing up in Jyväskylä. "They were first to congratulate me and told me it was a good game from me. Teemu was amazing. Again. Three assists. Simply amazing. All of the Finn here are amazing, they do everyting so well. It's great to be part of team. All of them have been so helpful to me whenever I have been needing some help. As kid I joked with my friends than someday I will play in the same team with Selänne in the NHL but I couldn't really believe it then. But here I am now."

Here's the link albeit it's in Finnish.

Some players lose their confidence when they come to nhl, some dont. Vatanen plays the same level the has always played, guaranteed future duck.

What you need to remember is that, while that may have been a basic game by Vatanen... it was not a basic game by Minnesota. They were just not dangerous offensively tonight. Their forecheck was weak, and they didn't press at all. This was a great game for Vatanen to get his feet wet, but it was a very one-sided affair.

I'm not saying Vatanen can't stick, but it would be inaccurate to look at this game as an example of what he should see most nights, and those aren't even the games that will really push him. Just wait until Anaheim is on the wrong end of a one-sided game. It's important to have some perspective here. This was a -very- easy game for Vatanen to be in. He did very well in it, but this was an unusual game. Usually there are two teams out there on the ice.

Yeah, but at least in the first power play for example we saw how good he can be and what he can do for the team - guess he can do even better. He's passes very hard on on tape, they really progressed the play, and the onetimers were on target and hard blasts even on hard passes.

But I agree that harder test's are needed, but you cannot blaim him, he did he's own part almost perfectly, and that is what you can wait from anyone on the team. Only fair thing will be that he would play against the Kings tonight. Let's hope he can play on that level night after night, also on the tough games.

I rather give any rookie a start in a game where team plays good, than otherwise.. That's good for ones confidence. Wild's havent been playing very well and its sad for MG. Their first line has been some kind of exception to it, but they havent been that dominant 5 on 5 neither really.

The PP is a bit of a different animal. That is when he'll have the most time and space, and will be in the best position to use his talents. I'm talking more about even strength play. Ultimately, that will probably be the deciding factor in whether he can stick full-time this season, or whether he is used in more of a specialist role.

I absolutely don't blame Vatanen. It was Minnesota who blew it tonight, not Vatanen. I just want to be honest in pointing out that this game was a bit of an anomaly. In my opinion this was the perfect first game for him to play in. It settled any nervousness he might have, and he has reason to come into the next game confident.

The only thing incommon for Fowler and Vatanen is that they both are kind of boom or bust types. Fowler being the Boom-type and Vatanen the Bust type.

Still it's kind of harsh to Vatanen that he is compared to Fowler. Vatanen was drafted 4th round and Fowler 1st round for a reason.

I see. It just looked like people are being harash for Vatanen for some reason first, even thought I remember reading some Eenoks messages some time ago.

It's just a reaction to the weird hype (it's not weird that he's being hyped: he's being hyped in a weird way).

Vatanen is an incredibly impressive prospect.

I don't understand why so many people keep looking at draft numbers even though many years have passed since. Draft number tells about Vatanen that 3½ years ago scouts didn't think he's one of the top prospects of his age group.

Now when he's 21½ years old it'd be stupid to look at his draft number to evaluate his potential. The reason why it's stupid is that instead of using four years old data we can look at how he's developed until today and evaluate his potential using up-to-date information. Players develop in different ways: some are very promising at draft age, some are poor at that age but develop years later etc.

Vatanen may not be a future star, but still we should analyze his (and also other players') potential using latest available data and not talk about how the player looked when he was 18 years old.

I'd prefer "Sami Vatanen is Genious", or something else with a sarcastic undertone. Those who have been part of this thread, or read through it fully, will appreciate the humor and thus be rewarded with laughter!

Just call it what it is:

Greatest Thread Ever (in the history of the internet).

I can't wait until Vatanen scores his first goal. This thread might explode. Literally explode.
