I thought that Nagy, Witt and O'Brien for first rounders were pretty shocking. I also thought that Zhitnik for Coburn and picks was horrible. I'm talking about trades where the return shocked me. Do trades at the deadline ever shock me just by happening? no, I guess not.
No. It was a long time coming. His contract ended that summer and the Flames knew they'd never be able to afford to keep him (and in the end the Avalanche couldn't either). They shipped him out in order to get something in return, nothing more.
My answer may be shocking but I was shocked when my Devils trade for Kovalchuk. If it would be Hossa or so..okey, but Kovalchuk?! Not like his trade wasn't expected but I couldn't imagine traditional defensive toned Devils would go hard for him. He was a pure offensive force at the time, concept which is not prefered by Lou (altough he already at the time might seen what was unseen ). Devil's record for most goals scored doesnt even hit 50 treshold. I would be more shocked only if we trade for Gaborik.
Smyth and the Oilers were both saying all the right things about contract negotations, and they weren't far apart. No one thought he'd get moved and then BAM! Right before the deadline, he's sent to the Islanders of all teams.
I still remember Nick Kypreos reading it off his Blackberry on live TV and being pretty much speechless
It's 25 years ago but when Marcel Dionne was traded to the Rangers, LA fans were in total shock. Lots of tears flowed that night because no one would ever believe that the negotiations would come to that. I mean at the time there were still some that thought Dionne would pass Howe before Gretzky would (we all know it would've been short-lived). Stunning day.....
