I thought that Nagy, Witt and O'Brien for first rounders were pretty shocking. I also thought that Zhitnik for Coburn and picks was horrible. I'm talking about trades where the return shocked me. Do trades at the deadline ever shock me just by happening? no, I guess not.

The Ryan Smyth deal might be the closest one.

It was semi-shocking when the Rangers traded Brian Leetch.

wait, what? I knew the Leafs were after Leetch for weeks, I was praying we'd get him and not Gonchar. It was not a shocker, I remember thinking "yes! finally!"

Perhaps not as a one time thing, but the Hossa deals were pretty weird. But dunno if I can blame the guy for cuphunting. And third time did make the charm for him.

No. It was a long time coming. His contract ended that summer and the Flames knew they'd never be able to afford to keep him (and in the end the Avalanche couldn't either). They shipped him out in order to get something in return, nothing more.

Of the '90s

- Turgeon and Malakhov from Isles to the Habs for Muller and Schneider

- Ron Francis, Ulf Samuelsson and Grant Jennings from Whalers to Pens for John Cullen, Jeff Parker and Zarley Zalapski.

- Larry Murphy from the leafs to the wings for nothing

- The awful deals when Holland decided to be aggressive in '99 Lemmie see.... Chelios, Samuelsson, Wendel Clark and Ranford for a bunch of draft picks which ended up being busts.

So this. It wasn't even rumored until an hour after the deadline had passed. Everyone figured the night was done when it started coming out.

3 of the 4 were busts. chelios alone made it all worth it.

I meant all the draft picks were busts. So Red wings came out on top no matter how you look at it

My answer may be shocking but I was shocked when my Devils trade for Kovalchuk. If it would be Hossa or so..okey, but Kovalchuk?! Not like his trade wasn't expected but I couldn't imagine traditional defensive toned Devils would go hard for him. He was a pure offensive force at the time, concept which is not prefered by Lou (altough he already at the time might seen what was unseen ). Devil's record for most goals scored doesnt even hit 50 treshold. I would be more shocked only if we trade for Gaborik.

Ryan Smyth gets my vote.

Smyth and the Oilers were both saying all the right things about contract negotations, and they weren't far apart. No one thought he'd get moved and then BAM! Right before the deadline, he's sent to the Islanders of all teams.

I still remember Nick Kypreos reading it off his Blackberry on live TV and being pretty much speechless

What a stupid, stupid trade though.

Chelios is the answer. He was very vocal in his opposition to ever playing for Detroit, and Detroit was not just the Hawks' biggest rival, but their ONLY rival.

And then BOOM!

Chelios for Anders Eriksson (decent up-and-down career) and two first picks (busts).

That one was out of nowhere and helped the Wings a lot. It would be like Patrick Roy to the Bruins.

It's 25 years ago but when Marcel Dionne was traded to the Rangers, LA fans were in total shock. Lots of tears flowed that night because no one would ever believe that the negotiations would come to that. I mean at the time there were still some that thought Dionne would pass Howe before Gretzky would (we all know it would've been short-lived). Stunning day.....
