Bob doesn't have that much money to spend

Roughly the line-up looks like this:

1st line: $7M (Higgins-Koivu-Ryder)
2nd line: $7M (Perezhogin-Ribeiro-Kovalev)
3rd line: $5M (Plekanec-Bonk-Zednik)
4th line: $2M (Murray-Begin-Downey)
Subs: $1M (Kostitsyn-Ferland)

1st pair: $5M (Markov-Rivet)
2nd pair: $4M (Souray-Dandenault)
3rd pair: $3M (Bouillon-Komisarek)
Subs: $ 1M (Streit-Coté)

Goalie 1: $3M Huet
Goalie 2: $2M Aebisher

Total: $40M

$40M. That's about the amount of money the owner is prepared to spend this year in player salaries. I don't think BG even had $5M to spend on a UFA. Standing pat wasn't a strategy, it was a necessity. No money, no candy.

in other words, we overpaid a few players and our line-up sucks.

With the signing of our RFA's we will be somewhere between 38 and 39M. That leaves 5-6M in caproom. It's room to sign a Roenick or Shanahan possibly but I think if we improve it will come from trades.

I think Gainey made it clear that before the beginning of the season he wants to be between 41 and 42..

What Gainey should have done is trade Zed and Ribs ($3.5M) for a prospect or not qualify them if there were no takers. This would have given him the coin to go after a $3M to $4M UFA but this would have been short of the $5M to $7M needed to sign UFAs of the Arnott, Elias, Kubina, Chara, Shanahan etc... quality.

Now he's gonna have difficulty trading Abby because most teams have filled their goaltending needs. Anyway, by trading Abby, we save only $1M because we have to give $1M to Danis to be the back-up goalie.

This is what we need, trade both Abby and Ribs to Detroit for Lang+ a pick. Trade Zed for a pick. Now hopefully we can sign Shanny and Laraque.

Higgins Koivu Kovalev
Shanny Lang Ryder
Begin Pleks Perez
Murray Bonk Laraque for tough teams or Downey other times.

If Kost starts to look like he can crack the lineup look at trading a forward to make room. Maybe Ryder if he can get a high 1st rounder or up and coming D-man.

kinda off topic... but since July 1st ( with our only transaction being signing Boullion) are we the least active team in the NHL? or has someone done absolutely nothing?

4 millions. One go to the new 2nd goalie so it give 3M to spend of a UFA. No quality players went for that price.

Dan (Montreal) thread showed very well that we have almost no room to spend.

Anaheim, Buffalo, Columbus, Florida, and Pittsburgh haven't done much, if anything, either.

Weight just went for 3.5M but I think it was more the fact that he wanted to go back to St-Louis

Ugh...nevertheless i'm kinda peeved. I don't want something to happen for the sake of something to happen... we NEED an upgrade. I seriously expect at least two somewhat major transactions ( UFA forward signing, trade involving Aebischer +)

Abby was paid 1.9M, so expect it to be around that number. So say he signs for 2M. Zed gets 1.9M. That's 3.9M if you can move them without taking on any additional salary.

We are over 30M with 15 players. Add Abby at 2M, + whatever Ryder gets, which one has to think he will get a nice raise of his 1M contract. Then Ribeiro if he stays the same as last season will get 1.2M or so. Higgins has to get 950K, Komisarek has to get at least 951K, Perezhogin has to get at least 787,500K. That's 6 players at around 7-8M, plus you need 2 more roster players.

If you sign a guy you take a guy off the lineup via trades or what not...so there is more then enough space.

It is amazing how badly Gainey has overpaid every single player he has signed. It's mind-boggling. It's time to bring in somebody to tlak contract and just let Gainey make deals/find players (even though it won't happen).

There`s a lot of players we can get rid of to gain space toward the cap:

Zednik
Bonk
Aebischer
Sourey
Ribeiro
even Markov(he`s good but if you have the chance to have a superstar like Chara or Pronger...)

Players lose about 50% of their salaries just because of the taxes here in Montreal. You HAVE to overpay if you want anyone to play here.

I just looked at the roster and damn! We lack offensive talent BADLY. I mean, we're really weak up front.

Precisely.

I love the Habs, I do, but Gainey has been overpaying each guy on the roster by a few hundred thousand (at least) for years now, and it's finally showing. Remember when the Stars lineup got all bloated near the end of Gainey's run there, too? It's not just because of the wealth of the franchises, it's his crazy chequebook!

The Habs would be better off to flip Gainey and pick up a better GM when the time comes. In the meantime, I will confess that Gainey has done alright in terms of player acquisitions, and I do think the Habs can still make the playoffs next year. Not sure if they will do to much in the playoffs, but we all can hope.
