Joe has to be waiting for Torts or Laviolette to drop. I wouldn't fire him until one of them is out either.
Torts won't get fired unless it's an early exit this year. Laviolette is most likely the first one to go among the two, and even then I'd say it's only if the Flyers miss the playoffs or an early exit...and that means we get to deal with Gully till season end.
If we continue to get lose / outshot in the next 5-10 games, Joe won't have much of a decision but to fire Gully. We acquired Jagr, Whitney, and Roy to make a run for the cup.
Best case scenario: Coaching change, we make the playoffs
Worst case scenario: Coaching change works but too late to squeeze into the playoffs, and we end up drafting 10-20th
Or we keep Gully, Joe trades Ryder, Whitney, Jagr at deadline and we draft top 5.

many possibilities....
To make the playoffs. We haven't had a shot at the cup for years.

The name of the game is to win the cup. No fans go into the season with the mentality of knowing they won't win the cup; what kind of fun is that. We acquired 3 top 6 players so we could give ourselves a better chance, even if that chance is small.

Sorry but teams know when they have the pieces to contend and we certainly did not acquire two 40+ players and one reclamation project in Roy to contend, but to help with the PP and offense- and it hasn't worked that well so far. We definitely do not have the defense either to make the playoffs with any certainty, let alone make a deep run.
I know Joe would be hesitant to fire Gulutzan based on the ramifications it would have on him. Gully was supposed to be a coach who could "grow with the youth of this team" and be a long-term solution. Firing him would mean Joe has failed again to properly identify the right coach for this team, and probably lead to his own demise.
But if Gulutzan is going to continually undermine his philosophy and vision to develop the youth of this team, he has to step in, right? I mean he can't just keep letting Gulutzan drive this team into the ground.

Shoulda hired Paul Maclean.
Easy to say in hindsight now. Ottawa is a well-built team from within and that Bryan Murray guy is a solid GM.
Do you have perfect Bob Ross clips cued up and ready for use? I would love to see Gully/Ross talking about how this boneheaded highsticking penalty is a happy cloud and needs a friend.
It's immaterial, but I was saying it that offseason. I didn't really understand why he wasn't even in the conversation.
Did you know much about Maclean prior to his stint in Ottawa? It's hard to say he could've worked here since he is definitely coaching a better Ottawa squad. Having someone like Karlsson move the puck and be that creative offensively is a boon for any coach, and we have Yanni Gogolak instead. Gully does suck, but the team isn't put together well for anything save for a smoke-and-mirrors act of "being competitive."
That said, I do believe we interviewed Kirk Muller too and I don't know who else.
