23-Man Roster (as of today)

Frolov-Conroy-Cammalleri
O'Sullivan-Kopitar-Brown
Thornton-McCauley-Willsie
Avery-Belanger-Kostopoulos

Gleason-Blake
Sopel-Visnovsky
Norstrom-Miller

Cloutier-Garon/Laberbera

Scratches: Cowan, Parros, Weaver, Armstrong (minors)

The average age on the Kings roster is 28. The estimated team payroll with the inclusion of the latest free agent signings, the rookies and the raises due to restricted free agents is set at about roughly $37-39M.

I think it is a safe assumption that Kopitar and O'Sullivan are the two most NHL-ready prospects who are ready to step in. They have performed exceptionally in high levels of competition. With that said, I'm not sure if Lombardi is done and this won't be the opening night lineup for the start of the 2006-2007 season.

With the additions of McCauley, Willsie, Thornton and Cloutier, this opens the possibility for the Kings to make some deals. It is great to have competition at every position come training camp, but I anticipate a trade to clear some room for a youngster or two to step in.

Wow very close to my proposed:

Frolov Conroy Kopitar
Brown O'sullivan Cammalleri
Thronton McCauley Avery
Cowan/Parros Belanger Kostopoulos

Blake/Gleason
Norstrom/Sopel
Visnovsky/Miller

Garon
Labarbera

I don't think the Kings are gonna play Kopitar and O'Sullivan on the same line, that is if both of are even ready to play in the NHL.

That lineup doesn't look too bad. It's better then last years. It really is gonna come down to how well the kids play.

I don't think DL is done yet...

Sorry...I'm joking.

However, I do have this weird feeling that he might be LA-bound.

I noticed Avery being listed in your lineup. Is he expected back with the Kings this year? Was his beef with Mark Hardy settled?

Sean Avery was qualified and will be retained. Mark Hardy has moved on and was hired as an Assistant Coach with the Chicago Blackhawks. I guess this is a test trial to see how Avery conducts himself on and off the ice under new management and a new coaching staff.

I personally think he will strive from the changes and the addition of some leaders to the locker room will help mold Avery to become a better TEAM player. He will mature.

Is Armstrong really under contract for this season?? I've seen listings where he is and ones where he isn't. And for that matter, is Dempsey?

NHL.com and LAKINGS.com released the official free agent list and Armstrong's name is omitted from them. Therefore, he is under contract.

I don't like the fact that Conroy is our #1 center.

Neither do I but that is just what it is right now. Hopefully that changes. There are no #1 centers available in the free agent market and I'm not sure how many are available through trade. Top line centers aren't easy to come by.

Nor are they all that necessary.

Considering that the Kings have two potential #1 centers in O'Sullivan and Kopitar, I don't have a problem with Conroy retaining that position temporarily. I'd rather have that than for DL to go out and get a #1 center that'll just make it impossible for the two kids to have the spot once one of them is ready for it.

Historically speaking, they have been an integral ingredient in the success of championship teams. Staal and Brind'Amour, Richards and Lecavalier, Nieuwendyk and Gomez, Yzerman and Fedorov, Sakic and Forsberg, Modano and Nieuwendyk, Lemieux and Francis, Gretzky and Messier, Trottier and Goring, etc, etc. There seems to be a pattern with Stanley Cup Championship teams having two potent scoring lines along with a productive checking line.

Conroy is on the last year of his contract (he signed a three-year deal during the off-season prior to the lockout. So the first year on his deal cancelled out, he played on the second year of his contract and will be entering the final year on his deal.

The contracts of Sopel, Miller, Armstrong and Cowan will also be expiring at the end of next season. The Kings aren't locked up in terribly bad contracts that would be difficult to remove.

Conroy signed a 4-year deal. He still has two years remaining (which is good, IMO).

IMO, as long as the core is strong, it shouldn't really make a difference if the team has a traditional #1...
