As for the "desperate attempt" at the POs , well thats not exactly what i would see as the sole motivation.

I would say the motivation would be a possible PO seed this year and a inside track at signing CP. With the core piece being possibly a 15th overall draft slot as the only thing we would miss.
People like you who think that the draft is not the most important and effective way to build a team are the reason that the Leafs are so brutal.

HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!! You obviously have not checked my past post history.

I think you don't have a flippen clue what my priorities are.

You obviously have not given any thought to the fact that we could offer Corey Perry a 8 year contract when all other teams could only offer 7.

One thing I noticed is that Valtteri Filppula is a UFA this season .. With Detroit already having Frazen, Datsyuk, Zetterberg locked up long term at healthy cap hits I wonder if they're going to let Filppula walk as he'll likely look for a raise and a bigger role going forward.

I say this because I doubt the Leafs will get Getzlaf, and if unless a big trade looms, the FA market is the only place to look if they want to upgrade on Bozak (who is also a UFA). Filppula fits the bill in terms of size, defensive ability, and has enough skill (IMO) to slot in on a line with Kessel and Lupul .. I think that would really be a really good fit.

Lupul - Filppula - Kessel
JVR - Grabo - Kule
Frattin - Kadri - Komarov

I think that would be a very good top 9 moving forward ... As far as a contract, given the market for centres, I'd be ok with a 3-4 year deal around $3.75-$4 mill per ..

Thoughts?

Also to note, with Detroit's injuries on defense, I wonder if a trade of Franson/Holzer (or another one of our d) + Bozak for Filppula + a 3rd rounder would work .. All players are UFA's at the end of the season

I love Filppula, but I think he will get offers in the 4.5 mil range to be honest. That said, I'd probably still do it if he puts up 60+ points again this season.

BE a step up from Bozak. A bridge until MacKinnon is ready to take over.

Would you rather have Flip at $4.5 mill or Bozak at $3-$3.5(which I can see him getting)?

I agree it's Flip will likely have a higher cap hit, but relatively speaking I think it's worth the premium to pay for the potential gain ...

It's tough to gauge otherwise how we'll realistically improve the centre position .. I love Bozak, but I don't see him fitting with Grabo and Kadri already in the mix long term .. Kessel needs a bigger centre to be more potent and consistent

I'd rather have Flip for sure.

Exactly what I would say. In fact Halak had achieved more with less at an earlier age. I'm boggled by people who think Schneider returns would be massive. Does nobody pay attention to history and comparables?

Me too, but I wouldn't put Kulemin up on the top line.

Just a little stroking of ROR during the hotstove. Comparing him to Peca.

Nice. Even if he is Peca, Reimer isn't Hasek. We need someone better.

Man do we ever need some size in the top nine. We are absolutely useless against teams like the Rangers and Bruins. Not sure where Nonis is going to find guys that will help work the boards, but god damn, we need some big bodies ASAP.

OEL is the second best player drafted from that 2009 draft. Gonna take a 1st rounder to swing that deal. I'd still do it.

We need a Paul Stasny type number 1 C in the worst of ways.

Maybe we swap Gardiner and Gunnarsson?

Boedker is no dud either. Him and Kadri were amazing together and would be great to see if that chemistry still carries over

Although I think Brodin has OEL potential. If we can get him + for Kessel I'd do that

Biggs will be joining the Marlies next year, he looks like he could be exactly the type of player we need. He, alongside guys like Ross, Devane, Broll, and Leivo will be a wave of tough forward prospects joining the pro ranks soon.

I don't think Macarthur really fits in with our team, I hope he is traded this year at the deadline. He's an okay player, but we need to get more size along with skill upfront. If we could get a late first for him I would be ecstatic, but a 2nd + a prospect would be okay too.

My ideal semi-realistic offseason would include (each individual move is somewhat believable, but no way they all happen)

-sign Backstrom, Filpulla, and a veteran defensive D (Lydman, Smid, Scuderi, etc are options)
-draft Barkov and Comrie

My unrealistic ideal offseason?

- sign Getzlaf/Perry/Howard and a defensive D
- draft MacKinnon and Fucale
