It's called "holding them accountable"

Hasn't happened yet this season.

The one time this season he scratched a guy to hold him accountable, the Fire Gully shouts became the loudest noise around...

You're only telling half the story here but I think you know that. They scratched Larsen for "penalties" which is fine, but they are not consistent at all with punishment. There are other penalty takers in this team and they get rewarded with even more ice time.

But the penalty problem touches almost the entire lineup.

The difference is last year most penalties were players acting out or taking dumb penalties. That's easy to correct. In fact, I'd argue based on 9 games this year they have.

Someone mentioned this, and it might have been this thread, the penalties this year are because the guys are getting beat pretty consistently and reacting to those mistakes. They are a result of being a bad team and playing as individuals.

Sure there have been some bad calls, and they are calling interference tighter this year .... but this is a bad team taking penalties you'd expect a bad team to take.

Even Gulutzan whining about the phantom high stick ... that was after a turnover IIRC. Whitney's high stick last game was definitely after a turnover. He was trying to lift the guys stick. I think you could say the majority of the penalties are someone trying to redeem themselves for a mistake they or someone else made just before the call.

Only 4 players on this team haven't taken one minor, and that's including Sceviour, Rome, and Roy. Naturally, Eriksson is the only regular who hasn't taken one.

The problem is is that it's not one or two guys, it's all up and down the line-up.

20 players have taken at least one minor, 15 have taken at least 2. Those are ridiculous numbers, especially this early in the season.

I don't disagree with any of this. My point is trying to find a solution may be a pointless endeavor. The coach's remark last night that he was going to punish them in practice for the penalties is silly. That could work if was aggression or shenanigan based offenses, but are we really going to punish a D student for getting a 60 on his math test? This team is what it is.

Get better players or find a more successful system they can play within.

Thinking about it, there's so much that could be solved with a better system. Gully is just so ****ing stubborn, though, not only with his system but also playing vets.

The whole R. Smith thing pisses me off, too. I don't understand how a coach can be so off-base with what the GM wants to do.

He's been good in the bottom 6 so far. Not much offense, though.

He's looked pretty good I think. Strangely enough better than he did in Cedar Park. He's one of the few guys with energy out there and a jump in his step. He continues to make smart plays defensively. If more of the players on the team played like him maybe we'd possess the puck more...
