I think they're looking for forward help just as much, if not more now that Spezza's out at least half the year.

I'd rather just look out West anyway and not trade with a competitor if it could be helped.

Penner - Zubrus - Bernier
I'd want to see how he fits in here before we talk about contracts.

Ya, to raise his trade value.

Re: Penner

I feel like bringing in Penner would mean we let Zubrus walk in the offseason

I don't think the two would be mutually exclusive. Ideally you'd want to have both in order to load up the bottom 6 with Zubrus clones.

No doubt. We have a brutal glut at D, yet nothing near a star in the bunch. Aside from Larsson and Sal, I think each and every d-man is available in the right deal.

We could just play a giant sack of potatoes and not trade for Penner. No one would be able to tell the difference.

Los Angeles with 7 goals allowed tonight, hopefully Lombardi hits the panic button sooner than later.

Some are much less likely to be moved than others though. For example, I can't really see a deal for Zidlicky that makes sense. Harrold doesn't have enough value to be worth trading, Fayne's contract is way too good, and Greene is our de facto top pairing defenceman. I think it will have to be one of Tallinder or Volch who goes.

But Fayne's contract being so good makes him all the more appealing.

And while Greene is arguably our best defensemen, the seperation between he and the rest is not huge. If including him lands a real quality fwd, I think u have to do it.

But my overall point is I don't see any D-man aside from Larsson and Sal who are irreplaceable or untouchable. And given that we all kind of see a D for fwd trade as a necessity, I listen to all offers.

It's not like we still have Parise and Poni and don't have a need for forwards but we just want to clear some of the pipes. We need a top-6 winger back. Fayne will bring back that type of player. Scouts know his game. Not flashy but effective.

Speaking of Kessel above (and not in the conversation that I'd want him on the Devils per se), but he's really struggling thus far and you have to wonder when his Leafs tenure is going to come to an end either before the deadline or this offseason.

Have to think the new front office would want to start over here sometime soon. Kessel doesn't look too comfortable in Toronto and the fans don't seem too particularly enamored of him still (which isn't entirely his fault).

and it also weakens our D corps quite substantially. you think allowing 10 goals in 2 games without him is a coincidence?

Well people are complaining about Larsson not playing and they also want a top-6 winger then off Tally or Volch.

I don't think we need a top 6 winger. I think we need a top 9 winger.

Correlation does not mean causation. Did you see the goaltending versus the Isles as well as all the giveaways? Fayne isn't going to stop that. You're making it sound like Fayne has never been in a blowout before and insinuating that the lack of Fayne is the reason why Devils lost which is absolutely untrue. Having him back will not make a difference if most of the other Devils continue to play poorly.

We need two third line wingers. We need to roll 4 lines if we want our system to be affective.

Did a quick look to see what players have had a large decrease in ice time compared to last year. Came up with Chad LaRose, Brenden Morrow, Simon Gagne, Devin Setoguchi, Chris Stewart, and Marcus Johansson. Not sure if this would mean they are available but most of these guys have been bumped down based on new additions.

Would love to get Stewart. He's coming off a bad year as well so his value will be lower. Setigouchi might cost more than this team is willing to spend.

How old is Stewart? Could be a cheaper reclamation project which is Lou's specialty.
