I consider myself a smart individual. And yet I'll admit to stupidly thinking for five full years that Dougie not moving up in 2004 to take Cam Barker was an idiotic move.
Turns out that I would have screwed up the 2004 draft as badly as Dougie actually did by taking Alex Picard.
Yeah, but for now I still think if we had had the chance and passed that would have been a big mistake. Not that Murray doesn't have the potential to be great-I just want some offense. In 5 years we can revisit. Heck Murray might turn out to be Cam Barker and Yak another Filatov. Wouldn't that be ironic.
I, for one, will never forget Wade Dubielewicz. It was like watching a salmon stop pucks.
Excellent post. Well done, Sir.

I still think Ryan Murray is the better player. Nail may be a 30-40 goal scorer, but I think Murray has the potential to be a franchise defenseman. Time will tell, but Nail's hot start could turn into a cold streak real quick.
okay let me explain since you obviously missed the point- what i said was that NOT DRAFTING Yak IF we had the chance would have been a mistake as big as drafting Z & Filatov.
See not drafting a guy who I think will be a star is as bad as drafting the two bums.
Hopefully you now understand. If you disagree fine but at least disagree with the correct concept.
There is a tremendous irony in this post, seeing as though the point of what bizzz and I had to say was that it is a tad premature to judge Yakupov to already definitely be a star based on that early output, seeing as though we've had busts who performed similarly.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!
Chistov scored four points in his first game and these boards went total *******. Brunnstrom got a hat trick in his first game I believe. Hot starts don't mean much

Yup, and was a 5th overall pick the year prior. That removes the idea of "unknown rookie who no one scouted" possibility from the equation.
Anyone remember Dmitri Kvartalnov? Goals in his first five career games and a 14-game point streak to start his career. 10 goals in his first 9 games, 35 points in his first 25 games. He was out of the NHL for good after the next season.
Anyone surprised at how much Murray is being underrated right now (not by us but by other fans).
Guess what, his play was on par with Rielly's WHILE he had a torn labrum.
People substantially smarter than me on such matters have taught me a valuable lesson. And that is that the easily-seen gets overrated, and the unseen is underrated.
Murray's entire game is built on making the right play and putting himself in a position to do the most good. It's nowhere near as spectacular as an end-to-end rush, so it's not inherently seen as more unusual (and therefore more rare, and therefore more valuable).
just so you can all start getting it out of your system now....
