I don't know what the stat is for NHL goalies exclusively, but I have a couple goal tending books that both cite the amount of break-aways that go in as being around 20%. That could be total ******** intended to give goalies reading the book confidence though, who knows.

Been a goalie for 19 years and I'd say that's about right. 20-30%

Hopefully he's played his last game. I'd honestly play cal heeter before him.

How hard is it to find a capable NHL backup? Like seriously. Leighton sucks and Boosh isnt good enough anymore..

I really hope this is the last year for both those guys. How many more times are we going to keep recycling the same 2 garbage backups. Enough already, pay the extra 350k-400k and get a real NHL backup

You're all forgetting the age old sub-bylaw tucked away that says all of our back-ups must have played for us previously.

You can't say that until its over for me. People were saying the Briere and Timonen contracts were bad, well they seem to have worked out pretty well for me...

I can't see Leighton back next year. Homer has to realize that Leighton is terrible by now. If not, then he should be fired. I'm fine with Boucher if he's playing for the Phantoms. He's a good guy and someone who can help with the younger goalies in the system down there, so if he's willing to play in the AHL, then I'm all for it.

Don't know who we can bring in to back-up next season...

-Chris Mason
-Mathieu Garon
-Jason Labarbera
-Ray Emery

I'll take any of those guys besides LaBarbera. He is slightly better than Leighton.

Anton Khudobin is a UFA after this year.

Though he may hold out for a chance at a starting job, it'd be awesome for us and potentially for him to sign a ~2 year deal here to play under a veteran fellow countryman in bryzgalov. It may keep Bryz happy to have a fellow Russian on the team and may help Khudobin out by learning from him.

Just a thought.

I'd rather sign a veteran who excels in the back-up role.

Yeah I've always been fascinated by Khudobin but he has only played a handful of NHL games. His stats look good and I caught a couple of his games and he has looked good, but I don't know about putting all your chips on him depending on who else is out there. If there are other options that will sign for similar $$$, I might go with them first. But again, that all depends on who else is available and willing to sign. Also depends on how he plays this year (I assume he is the full time backup in Boston, no?).

Careful....people are getting the Holmgren syndrome with Khudobin (Aka Qdoba). Just because he had his first career shutout against the Flyers doesn't mean he is anything great...

There was a report a little while ago that Anton Khudobin will be heading back to Russia after this contract expires. I probably won't have the patience to find the article, but take my word for it. He most likely won't be in North America next year. And he really isn't a great back up goalie. We need someone with more experience.

Yeah, that's true. He's more a starter than anything.

Wait what??? A starter?? Rask is their starter. Khudobin has played what 8 NHL games? And we are calling him a starter?

EDIT: pretty good guess, he has played 8 games in the NHL, and that is over the period of 4 years.

STOP YOUR HATE! He had a SHUTOUT against the Flyers and Leighton had 3 against Montreal! This proves he is NHL material!

I think he means it in the sense that the guy will develop into a starter and won't be an back-up for his career.

I meant to say he's starter material, not that he's starting at the moment, and he's definitely better than your run-of-the-mill backup goalie.

edit: Had my reply window open for too long and RJ8812 beat me to it

I don't get the hype about Khudobin lol. Am I missing something here. He is not going to be a starter in the NHL.. ever. He will be returning to Russia most likely, and play for Moscow Atlant where he was during the lockout most likely. Just another player HF sees get a shutout and proclaims him as a starter. He has good NHL number due to such a small sample size. He was traded to Boston because they lacked depth at the AHL level last year.

His AHL numbers are okay, but not absolutely ground breaking.

We need a back up with experience and leadership qualities, not a goalie with 8 NHL starts. If Bryz goes down, would you feel confident with him as your starter?

I wasn't saying he is going to be. And where's the hype? It's just me thinking he is or is going to be a good enough goalie to be a starter. Whether he actually becomes one is a different matter.

True. He wasn't one of the best goalies in the KHL during the lockout, either. But that doesn't mean he's not good enough to be a starter in the NHL.

Would you pursue Luongo if things continue to go downhill w/ Bryzgalov?
