Can we stop basing a player's performance on 7-8 games?

EXACTLY! If a player is playing like this now, there are no other factors that change how you should interpret a player.

Can you guys please refrain from having an opinion within the first 10 games of a season guys, we don't wanna discuss eventual outcomes and the player performances within that time, on this, the largest of hockey boards.

Pretty easy to win arguments when you put words in the other persons mouth that they never said.

Further proof that you didn't even read my original post. I said at least until the end of this season.

There is a difference between having an opinion and calling a player's entire career overrated based on 8 games.

4th line maybe.

I think their days as 3rd liners have come and gone.

You have obviously misinterpreted both of my posts, they were both in next because I agree that too many people make bold assumptions based on the beginning few games of a season. The second post was obviously sarcastic (I even put in the emoticon...)

You should go back and read both of my posts after reading this

woah, woah, woah...... who said after the first period.

It's ALWAYS been after the second period of the eleventh game*. No changing the rules after the season is started.

* By the way, I've got a beauty all cued up about Jordie Benn that I'm gonna hit "post" in about 5 periods of hockey from now. Ever since he changed his name and position, he seems like a different guy!

Of course it's after the first period, if GMs wait until after the second period to make the necessary evaluations and roster moves, the season could very well be lost.

Not in game shape. Stays up way too late doing laundry.

Excellent point.

I was confusing it with the ability to safely make wild (but certain) predictions about who is a slam dunk to with the Cup this year.

And with Crosby as the 4th line center, that's a pretty decent looking team on that alone.

You said "a partial season".

Can we at least give them a partial season before starting threads like "OMG what is wrong with Jordan Staal?!"
See?

So what qualifies as a partial season?

It is perfectly reasonable in a forum like this to base a players performance after 7 or 8 games if it is 7 or 8 games into the season.

It's fine if people criticize players for having a poor 7-8 game stretch. It's not fine for people to take those 7-8 games and claim that player X will suck for the rest of his career. Most people are doing the latter.

Im taking out all of my savings and betting it on whatever team is in first at that time, as a Canucks fan I know that leading the league is essential to winning the cup.
