I'm really interested in what people think this guy's potential is. I don't get to see him a lot. Anyone fill in what his style, strengths, weaknesses, and upside is?
I know he's made a huge push for a contract this year.

I don't think he was ever in danger of not receiving a contract, the Wings have always said nice things about him and blamed his terrible +/- on his poor team which is proving out right now.
He is an offensively gifted player that has very good skating. Was the former #2 overall pick in his OHL draft year. He was a longshot skill selection, the kind the Wings have always loved. I expected a big year and the mono thing was a bad start, but he has been a ppg player for basically three years. It will come down to size, but should he continue packing on muscle it will be interesting to see what happens. But his skating is NHL legit and he has nice vision. Still an interesting prospect hard to tell pro wise, but some very nice skills and it could all come together as a sneaky depth player with offense.
Best case scenario: picture current Red Wing Cory Emmerton, but without Emmerton's skating and willingness to get involved in physical battles (not that Emmerton's a physical beast, either, mind you. Just that at least he doesn't shy away from the corners).
Quine's shifty and a good playmaker at the junior level, but he's not the most physically engaging player I've seen. Not unless he did a complete 180 since joining the Bulls. I've always found him a bit too perimeter for my liking. Solid defensively, but again, not quite living up to his advanced billing when drafted as a gritty, two-way stud in the making.
When Kingston originally drafted him, I think Gilmour had visions of himself in Quine. Problem was Quine didn't have the grit/intensity that Gilmour played with.

From the couple games I've seen Quines pretty damn fast and red wing scouts agree with me there. Emmertons skating was a knock when he was coming in. He might only be an Emmerton level player, or might be worse but it wont be because of his skating. Emmertons offense actually went down from his draft year as well
I think Quine definitely deserves a contract, hes put up a lot of points in junior, is a great skater and is decent 2 way guy from what I've seen. Canada used him as a shut down guy in the u 18s. I think the only people questioning if he should get a contract are people who have never watched him

I should clarify. When I say skating, I'm not referring specifically to outright speed. I mean overall stuff like balance and being strong on his skates as well. Emmerton was a lot harder to knock off the puck when he had it than Quine is, and he was stronger on his skates in any sort of battles against opposing defensemen.
Also, I wasn't commenting on whether or not Detroit should offer him a contract. I think there's enough there that there's no risk if the Red Wings do. I was just more giving a scouting report based on personal viewings of him.

Oh alright makes sense. It didnt make sense because Quines pretty fast but talking about balance and everything you clarified it.
Emmerton has turned into a little better player than people in Detroit give him credit for. I don't think he is a great comparison here though. The big thing will be how Quine fills out, he looks to still have room for growth and will get the full three years to develop as player in Grand Rapids/Toledo by the Wings. His skating is legit and his offensive vision is pretty good. He has some decent defensive tendencies. He could really take off like Ferraro has done or struggle to find offense like Emmerton did for the most part as a pro. I do think his NHL caliber skating gets him to the show provided he continues to add strength.
The kid is commited and i wish ottawa drafted him. Hes going to be a good player fot detroit in the future.
I went to school with Alan, and was close friends with him, for about 4-5 years before his family decided to move back to Ontario.
Even at 9 years old he believed he would be a NHL player. He's always been a great hockey player.. I remember we'd play floor hockey during Gym class and he would dominate everyone. He was that guy that you loathed playing against, and felt proud to play alongside. Even after they moved I made a point to follow his career as I knew he would make it to the big league.
He always talked about wanting to be drafted by the Sens, and he wanted so badly to play under Brian Kilrea for the 67's..

Classic case of undersized guy with speed and offensive talent but questionable in everything else. He has a chance at the NHL for sure but he's going to have to work hard plus get some luck.
