agree to disagree but i thought morrow proved useful in some offensive zone possessions. his cycling and board game was better than before.

anyhow, not an ideal first line combo to be sure, but fared better than i would have thought, providing no real reason to necessarily change that line for tonight's game. and as bigG mentioned, would prefer morrow over nystrom, fiddler, roussel, or garbutt.

If the question is Dillon vs Larsen, I play Dillon every time.

The question is who plays on D. Robidas, Daley, Goligoski, and Rome aren't getting scratched. That leaves two spots for three players, and Larsen is the odd man out.

Why is Rome not getting scratched?

The same reason the other three veterans aren't being scratched. Gully isn't going to willingly roll out two rookies and a second season player as half his defense. No coach would.

That doesn't really make any sense. It's just a rationalization for Gulutzan's crazy decisions.

If they are better options than Aaron Rome(a career 6th/7th d-man), then yes they would. not only are you a better team right now playing larsen over Rome, but Larsen also gives you the much higher upside down the road.

And Larsen is your only other right handed defenseman besides Robidas. It just doesnt make sense.

It's an explanation of the same decision every coach in this league would make. No NHL coach is playing near rookies as half his d men by choice.

Rome hasn't been bad. An actual average 6th D-man is obviously beyond our ability to perceive.

Age, experience, merit, etc. shouldn't matter. You play the 6 best available defenders. It's pretty obvious that Larsen is one of those 6.

Dillon and Larsen should both be playing over Rome. With Benn back down then Rome should become the 7th dman.

Dillon-Robidas
Daley-Oleksiak
Goligoski-Larsen

"Near rookie" is a stretch. Saying the coach won't play a player because of inexperience, when that player is the most experienced out of the group in question is a bit strange. Larsen isn't some question mark. He's shown he can play. He's been better than half of the D corps. Let him play. Transitional year.

I don't see how Larsen is in the same boat as the rookies. He has pretty much a full year under him, and by the end of last season, I thought he was our best defenseman. I know thats not saying much, but I thought he would be logging 20+ min a game this year in a top 4 role.

i'm not so sure that gmjn views this as a transitional year. he signed whitney and jagr to get this team over the hump and into the playoffs. the message to gully is not likely to be "develop the youth." it's, "win."

At the time, it also helped get them to the cap floor ... before they changed it.

That's not how I see it. He signed those guys to provide (real) leadership, maintain a passable on-ice product, and take up cap space.

If they made the playoffs, great. But the message to the coach was not "make the playoffs at all costs".

Not to mention how badly we're failing at the "win" part...

Yep. A transitional season where you don't play the young players is just a losing season.

Are you sure? Gaglardi has been clear that he thinks this team is good enough to make the playoffs. His coach isn't going to keep job by greasing training wheels. Gully is going to coach to win at all costs (even though I'm not convinced scratching one young payer a few times is much of a cost). Gully knows what's probably waiting for him if this team misses the playoffs again.

Well, I seriously doubt scratching Larsen for Rome twice played even the slightest role in the losing problem. This team is losing because they can't score goals, and that problem almost entirely rests with the forwards giving this team very little so far.

We'll lose 2-0 and get outshot 36-1.
