Most of mine are the "usual" books you see on lists like these... but there's a reason that they're considered the best books of all time.

1) The Outsiders - S.E. Hinton
2) The Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger
3) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson
4) 11/22/63 - Stephen King
5) Brave New World - Aldous Huxley

HM:
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
Animal Farm - George Orwell

In no particular order:

1. Graham Greene - The Quiet American
2. Sylvia Plath - The Bell Jar
3. Richard Yates - The Easter Parade
4. Muriel Spark - The Driver's Seat
5. Jay Asher - Thirteen Reasons Why

Has anyone here read Franz Kafka? It seems to me a lot of the stuff I end up loving has at least some Kafka-ian influence in it. I definitely want to check out some of his stuff.
Ender's Game was a good book, IMO. Nothing spectacular, but solid. The rest of OSC, particularly the sequels to Enders Game, urgh. Not great.

The Trial is my 2nd favourite book. I prefer it quite a bit over Metamorphosis. I am a huge fan of Kafka stuff all around though. One of my favourite parts of my trip to Europe was the Kafka museum in Prague . We had the place to ourselves...

I never saw the attraction to that book to be honest. Granted I haven't read it since high school, but I just found the whole thing tedious and boring. I enjoyed alot of the books I read in high school, including the outsiders, TKAMB, Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, I guess I just never got Catcher.

I am going to bump this thread because I am now tasked with looking for a novel to read for a grade 12 english ISU. The teacher prefers that we pick something rather of a classic as it (she says) will be easier to compare to othello and another (unknown) book.

Sorry if this is offtopic but I didn't want to create another thread.

I am leaning toward SH5.

I cannot read anything that is already cirriculum, which is most of the books in here (hoping SH5 isn't)

Any suggestions?

Just read the plot summary of Thirteen Reasons Why...

Likely going for this.

Looks super-relatable to othello.

If you (are white and) do Heart of Darkness and write a nice essay about post-colonialism you're pretty much guaranteed an A.

I picked this up recently because I'm a huge Blood Meridian fan and was looking for something similar. I've heard WtLO is a little bit too similar but I'm glad you're giving it a high ranking. I'm looking forward to it, think I'll be reading it next.

Have you read In the Rogue Blood by James Carlos Blake? That is another book similar to Blood Merdian

I was recommended that one as well, but I haven't picked it up yet. On the list though.
