What hype was the Cane management sending you guys?
This is a quote from the email/press release the team sent out when the trade was made:
"Jordan is an elite two-way player who possesses a rare combination of speed, size, scoring ability and defensive responsibility,” said Rutherford. “For his young age, he has a wealth of NHL experience, including winning the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009. And he is obviously a natural fit for our team in joining our captain, his older brother Eric."
Jordan Staal is UNDERRATED. Anyone who watched the playoffs last year is well aware of this. I'd LOVE to have him on my team as a 2nd line center. Just for kicks Pens fans, who were we over-rating last week, was it Kunitz(so slow;just terrible)? Well, now he's 2nd star of the week, so I guess we can shift back to under-rated now, right? Oh wait, that's right, let's just pile all the credit on Crosby.

Don't expect huge numbers. You won't get them. Staal is a great physical forward who is responsible in his own end and can produce decent offensive numbers given the opportunity. He's not a "skill" player though. He's gritty, athletic, and hardworking but when you see him trying to finesse the puck you've gotta hit him on nose with a rolled up newspaper and say "no."
I was just making a little quib about you saying who do we overrate this week. Even put the , sorry, no offense intended.
None taken. To be a regular poster here, your skin has to be pretty thick, and often it's easier to mistake the sarcasm than it is to believe the poster.
Assessing a trade/player less than 10 games in is ridiculous. He has a new system and new teammates to learn. If you switch jobs/companies, even with almost the same role, do you expect to be as productive in the first week as you were in your previous role?
J. Staal is capable of being a 30-goal 70-point second-line center and one of the top penalty killers in the league, with a track record of elevating his game in playoffs. Rate that however you'd like.

Absolutely, especially since he was clearly not going to re-sign in Pittsburgh and they could have just signed him this summer. Had the lockout gone the entire year, Carolina would have given up assets to not get him any earlier.
No they didn't. They overrated his offensive ability but he is still a two-way beast. A 60-70pt guy is his ceiling while also being able to shut down the other teams top players. BTW. He just scored.
