Jed Lowrie to Oakland

Quote:
BREAKING: @Athletics acquire SS Jed Lowrie, RHP Fernando Rodriguez from @Astros for 1B Chris Carter, RHP Brad Peacock, C Max Stassi.
Quote:
The A's added another new piece to their infield on Monday, acquiring Jed Lowrie and right-handed pitcher Fernando Rodriguez from the Astros for first baseman Chris Carter, right-hander Brad Peacock and Minor League catcher Max Stassi.

Lowrie, who turns 29 on April 17, played 93 games at shortstop for Houston last season, spending time on the disabled list for a sprained right thumb and sprained right ankle. He posted a .244/.331/.438 batting line, with 16 home runs and 42 RBIs, while his .980 fielding percentage led National League shortstops with at least 70 games.

Lowrie played for the Red Sox from 2008-11 and made starts at second base and third base, in addition to shortstop. The A's signed shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima from Japan in December and also have Adam Rosales and Jemile Weeks in the mix at second, with Josh Donaldson and Eric Sogard at third.

Oakland also receives Rodriguez from its new American League West foe. The 28-year-old right-hander threw 70 1/3 relief innings for the Astros last season and went 2-10 with a 5.37 ERA, 78 strikeouts and 34 walks.

What the ****? Trade both Carter and Yuba City boy Stassi for Jed Lawrie?

I don't like it.

I'll have a full breakdown of the #Astros & #Athletics trade up by the end of the evening. Right now, I'm eating tacos.

As an A's fan, I hate this trade. Brutal transaction by Billy.

Four players. With Bud Norris being the most expensive at 3 mill.

That's not counting Wandy Rodriguez who they are paying 5 mill.

What happened to Carter being a potential star in the making?

The team sees Brandon Moss as a better hitter and everyday player.

Carter did hit 1 hr for every 13.6 ab's last year (16/218). That's a very good ratio. he'll hit some bombs in Houston. I guarantee he hits one out dead center there this year.

astros aren't really trying to out marlin the marlins either. luhnow took over a team that had next to nothing left in the system that was available in the next two or three years and a ****** major league team with a few expensive guys on it who weren't very good.

they didn't throw 100+ million dollars at free agents and trade them less than a year later. luhnow sold off ****** carlos lee and sent away the overpaid wandy rodriguez, agreeing to pay salary to get something back.

i'm really, really, really interested in seeing what the astros do. it's like what most roster nerds want; they're going to essentially build a team from scratch. in 2015 or 2016, it's going to be lots of fun tracing the origin of that team back to today.

Thought the A's were very high on Carter so I am surprised they traded him

Depending on the other pieces of course but I like this trade for Houston. Carter is better than Lowrie. Brad Peacock's name sounds familiar. Was he once/is he a bright prospect or something?

Peacock was thought of a #2/#3 type of starter when he was with Nationals. Struggled in AAA last season and just turned 25. I wouldnt write him off just yet.

Astros have done reasonably well lately in this rebuild. They moved on guys that weren't the future (Carlos Lee, Wandy) and traded guys with value (Pence) that netted them guys like Singleton, Cosart, Santana and drafted well (Springer, Correa, McCullers). Lot to like about them. IMO they are a top-10 farm system with #1 pick in few months time.

Carter will strike out alot. Dont expect him to hit for a high batting average but what he will do is bring that light tower power. He has obvious flaws but 30 HR guys dont grow on trees. Astros will give him plenty of playing time with 1B, DH and LF all options.

He actually walked a fair amount in the minors.

Not a great trade by the A's but nothing that bad.
